YPSILANTI- The Kent State Golden Flashes baseball team won their seventeenth Mid-American Conference regular season title taking down the Eastern Michigan Eagles 13-2 in seven innings Saturday afternoon.
Kent State awaits the result of the series finale of Miami at Ball State. If Miami wins the RedHawks and Flashes will be MAC regular season co-champions at 23-7 in conference play. If Ball State comes wins Kent State will be the outright regular season champions.
Eastern Michigan would score the first run of the game on a solo homer in the bottom of the first, but after that it was all Kent State.
Brody Williams would tie the game up with a solo shot of his own on the top of the second and Luke Matthews would give them the lead after coming in to score on a double play in the third.
The Flashes would break the game wide open scoring four runs in the fourth. Hayden Jatczak would bring in the first two runs of the inning on an RBI single he served the other way to right field. Micah Rienstra-Kiracofe would then rifle a ball to second base that the Eastern Michigan defender struggled with, allowing two runs to score.
Alejandro Covas returned to the Kent state lineup after missing the last couple of weeks and drove in a run in the fifth thanks to a sacrifice fly out to center.
Two more runs would come across in the sixth inning courtesy of a pair of bases loaded walks by Ripken Reese and Kolton Schaller.
Kent State would put the game out of reach in the seventh with a 2-run homer off the bat of Jatczak, Jake Casey would score a few pitches later on a wild pitch and Hunter Klotz would drive in the last run of the afternoon on an RBI single.
Eastern would bring one run across in the bottom of the seventh but Ben Rabatin would slam the door closed.
Rocco Bernadina got the start on the mound for the Flashes and pitched well going 3.2 innings allowing just one run on one hit while striking out six Eagles. Kent State would then turn to Brody Krzysiak out of the bullpen and the righy pitched 2.1 shutout innings before turning the ball over to Rabatin to close out the seventh.
