OTTAWA, Ontario — Kent State rising sophomore Isaiah Ibit made an impressive professional debut this weekend at the Commissionaires Ottawa Open, not only making the cut in his first-ever pro tournament, but doing so on a course he's called home for years.
Ibit, an Ottawa native, finished T-58 at 12-under par, posting a consistent 3-under par in all four rounds.
"Going into this tournament, making the cut was pretty much my main goal," Ibit said. "I really wanted to play the weekend and as much golf as possible. Making it was awesome—especially at a course I've played a couple times every summer."
Sleeping in his bed and playing in front of hometown fans added to the moment for Ibit, who wrapped up his freshman year with the Golden Flashes.
"I got a lot of support here. And it's not bad either sleeping in my own bed for once too," he said.
Ibit credited his driver as the standout part of his game during the week, noting it helped him stay consistent and score efficiently.
"Driver was definitely working really well for me. I didn't really miss any shots with it, and I was able to put the ball in play every single drive," he said. "I actually led the whole field in driving accuracy, so that was pretty cool."
While the moment marked a milestone in his young career, Ibit says the experience doesn't shift his mindset heading into his sophomore campaign.
"This tournament didn't really change anything, it just kind of builds some momentum heading into the season," he said.
Ibit also noted that his freshman season at Kent State played a key role in preparing him for this week's success.
"I definitely learned a lot throughout the year, especially in course management," he said. "It opened my eyes to how different holes could be played, and knowing when to be conservative or aggressive. Playing great tournaments against great fields helped me get better through that."
The Commissionaires Ottawa Open is part of the PGA Tour Americas schedule. With his confident debut, Ibit adds another strong chapter to the legacy of Kent State Golf.
