About the Flashes
The Golden Flashes are set for their third and fourth games of a six-game road stand this weekend at Delaware and No. 17 Penn State. The team opened the season at home with a 10-1 victory over Mercyhurst, before beginning the road trip with a 9-3 defeat at No. 13 Ohio State and a 4-1 defeat at No. 15 Iowa last Friday. Maybritt Duwel scored Kent State's lone goal in the defeat at Iowa, assisted by Emma Rolston.
Emma Seger, Rolston, and Duwel are off to quick starts for the Flashes through the team's opening three games of the 2025 season. Rolston and Seger are tied with a team-high seven points as Rolston has three goals and one assist, while Seger owns a team-best three assists and two goals thus far. Duwel is tied alongside Rolston atop the team's goalscoring standings with three goals this season.
In 2024, the Golden Flashes recorded just one victory outside of the Mid-American Conference, a 4-3 stroke-off win at Michigan State. Kent State has already matched this mark with the team's season-opening 10-1 win over Mercyhurst. The Golden Flashes have three more opportunities to better the 2024 mark, with the two contests at Delaware and Penn State this weekend, as well as the team's non-conference finale at UMass Lowell next Sunday.
No. 17 Penn State will be Kent State's third ranked opponent of the 2025 season. The Flashes have faced Big Ten opponents No. 13 Ohio State and No. 15 Iowa in their previous two games, falling to both. Kent State is also slated to open MAC play at No. 14 UMass, before a home contest against No. 20 Miami, which will be the Flashes' fourth and fifth ranked opponents of the season if they remain ranked in the NFHCA weekly coaches' poll.
Scouting Delaware
The Blue Hens have opened the 2025 season with a trio of one-goal losses to Temple, California, and Penn State, with the opening two results coming in Newark. Despite a 0-3 record, Delaware has scored ten goals through three games, boasting two four-goal performances. Offensively, the Blue Hens are led by senior midfielder Emma Miller, who leads the team with three goals, supported by senior defender Iris Bekker, who has a team-high two assists. The primary source of Delaware's struggles has come on the defensive side of the field, as the team boasts a 0.350 save percentage.
Friday's matchup with Delaware marks just the third-ever matchup between the schools. The Golden Flashes and Blue Hens have split the all-time series 1-1 up to this point, with the most recent matchup taking place in the 2014 season, a 2-1 win by the Golden Flashes in Newark.
Scouting No. 17 Penn State
Sunday's game at Penn State represents the Flashes' third contest against a ranked Big Ten opponent this season. The Nitanny Lions opened the season with a tough 5-1 defeat at No. 3 Virginia. The team bounced back with two overtime wins last weekend to improve to 2-1, recording a 3-2 double overtime win against Delaware and a 2-1 overtime victory versus No. 9 Saint Joseph's in a pair of home contests. On attack, Josephine Purdy leads the Nittany Lions with two goals, while four other players have scored one goal in 2025. In goal, Aby Deverka boasts a 0.500 save percentage and a tally of eight saves in 202 minutes played across three games.
Friday's matchup with Penn State will mark the fourth consecutive season the Flashes have faced the Nittany Lions. Kent State is yet to record a victory over Penn State, with a 0-8 mark in the all-time series. In last season's game between the two schools, the Nittany Lions recorded a 4-1 victory at Murphy-Mellis Field in which Penn State outscored the Flashes 3-0 in the fourth quarter after a closely contested opening 45 minutes.
