NEWARK, Del. – The Kent State field hockey team fell 2-0 to Delaware on Friday night in game three of a six-game road stand. The Golden Flashes (1-3) were shut out for the first time in the 2025 season, despite registering four shots and six penalty corners in the fourth quarter.
The game opened as a defensive stalemate in the opening 28 minutes, with the teams combining for just one shot on goal. With just over 90 seconds remaining in the opening half of play, the Blue Hens converted on a penalty corner to take a 1-0 lead on the team's second shot on goal in the contest, taking the lead into the half.
Six minutes into the third quarter, Delaware doubled its advantage, once again converting a penalty corner to take a 2-0 lead. The Flashes' offense picked up in the fourth quarter, as four of the team's seven shots came in the period. Despite multiple dangerous chances, including a defensive save on an effort by Marissa Skinner and a Julianne Conroy shot off the post, Kent State was unable to break the seal on the Blue Hens' goal, ultimately falling 2-0.
Floortje Van Eijden, who played the entire second half after Allison Wood was in the cage for the opening 30, registered four crucial saves to keep the Flashes in the game to the end.
Kent State will return to action on Sunday, as the team remains on the road for its third matchup of 2025 against a ranked Big Ten opponent at No. 17 Penn State. Sunday's matchup with the Nittany Lions is set to begin at noon.
