STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The Kent State field hockey team faced No. 17 Penn State on Sunday in the team's final game ahead of next weekend's MAC opener, falling 5-2 to the Nittany Lions. The Golden Flashes (1-4) pulled within one goal early in the fourth quarter, before Penn State scored twice in the final ten minutes to seal the win.
The action started early on Sunday afternoon as Penn State found the opening goal of the contest after just 32 seconds. The Flashes responded swiftly, as Maybritt Duwel scored exactly one minute later to level the score at 1-1 just over 90 seconds into the game. Duwel's goal marks her fourth of the season, the most on the team. The Nittany Lions found the back of the cage in the second quarter to take a 2-1 advantage into the halftime break.
Penn State opened the second-half scoring midway through the third quarter, tallying the period's only goal to take a 3-1 lead into the fourth quarter. Eva Usoz, Kent State's leading scorer in 2024, cut the deficit in half with her second goal of the season to make it a 3-2 game with 12 minutes remaining. The Flashes were unable to push on for the team's first ranked win since 2021, as the Nittany Lions scored the final two goals of the contest to cement a 5-2 home victory.
Kent State's Allison Wood had an impressive day in the cage, recording a career-high 11 saves to help keep the Flashes within arm's length for most of the afternoon.
The Golden Flashes will return to action on Friday, September 19, when they open MAC play against UMass at 4 p.m. The contest in Amherst is slated as the Minutewomen's first-ever game in the Mid-American Conference.
