AMHERST, Mass. – The Kent State field hockey team opened MAC play on Friday evening, falling 4-0 to preseason conference favorite No. 12 UMass. The Golden Flashes (1-5, 0-1) held strong on defense in the first half, limiting the Minutewomen to just one goal, before a strong second half from UMass cemented the final result.
The Flashes opened the game with attacking intent in the third quarter, placing three shots on target, but Kent State was unable to open the scoring. UMass found the game's first goal toward the end of the opening period to take a 1-0 lead. An uneventful second quarter, in which neither team recorded an official shot, enabled the Minutewomen to hold a 1-0 halftime advantage.
As the third quarter commenced, UMass displayed why the team was picked first in the conference preseason poll in August. The Minutewomen scored three goals in the period, limiting the Flashes to just one shot in the third 15 minutes, to take a 4-0 lead into the final quarter of play. Kent State picked up the pace offensively in the fourth quarter, outshooting UMass seven to five and earning three penalty corners. Still, the Flashes were unable to break the seal on the UMass goal as the Minutewomen closed out a 4-0 home victory.
Over the course of 60 minutes, Kent State was kept off the board by a resolute defensive performance, as UMass tallied seven saves in the contest. In the cage for the Flashes, Allison Wood recorded two saves in the first half, while Floortje Van Eijden earned seven saves across the final 30 minutes of play.
The Golden Flashes will conclude a six-game road trip on Sunday at noon, as they head to UMass Lowell for the 2025 non-conference finale.
