KENT, Ohio- The Kent State Soccer team returns home to Zoeller Field at Dix Stadium for the second time of a three-game home-stand on Sunday when they take on the Bowling Green Falcons for a 1 P.M. start.Â
Last Time Out
The Kent State Soccer team received a hard-earned point in Mid-American Conference play at home against Ball State in a scoreless draw on Thursday night. It was also the first conference draw for the Flashes this season.Â
Both teams applied a lot of pressure on defense in a game where shots were hard to come by, much like the last meeting between the two programs in the MAC quarterfinals a season ago.Â
The best two chances of the night for the Flashes came in the 14th-minute and the 89-minute respectively. Junior defender Ali Weibel put a shot on target that was saved by Ball State's Kate Pallante, while freshman forward Lila Simon fired a shot from distance in the end of the game that was just to the left of the goal.
Ball State won in the shots category by a tally of 9-8, while four of them were on target compared to one for the Golden Flashes. Kent State edged the Cardinals in the corner kick department 3-2.
Junior goalkeeper Leah Shaffer played all 90 minutes in net for the blue and gold as she was able to produce four saves and a shutout in the second consecutive game on nine shots faced.Â
Scouting Bowling Green
The Falcons come into Sunday's game with a 6-2-5 record overall and a 2-1-4 record in conference play. The Flashes and Bowling Green currently have six common opponents so far this season as the Falcons have posted wins against Kentucky and Western Michigan. They were able to force draws against Eastern Michigan, UMass and Toledo, while falling to Ball State on the road last Saturday.
On the offensive end, the Falcons will be led by Emme Butera who has produced eight points off of three goals and two assists this season. However, the Falcons have distributed the goal-scoring effectively across the squad as they have 10 goal-scorers this season.
The only other multi-goal scorer on the team so far this season is Taylor Green with two scores. Ella Kane, Olivia McCuen, Minah Syam and Mia Ugarte have each recorded a goal and an assist each.
In net for Bowling Green will be Payton O'Malley who has started in 11 games this season. On 82 shots faced this season, she has been able to produce five clean sheets and 34 total saves. She leads the MAC in GAA at .061 as she has allowed just seven goals all year. She is also second in the conference in save percentage with a clip of .829.
Series History
Sunday's game will be the 35th all-time meeting between the Golden Flashes and the Falcons as the BG currently holds the series lead by a count of 19-10-5. Last Year, Bowling Green defeated Kent State at home, while the Flashes won the previous three meetings before that.
Up Next
After a match-up with Bowling Green at home, the Golden Flashes will return to Zoeller Field at Dix Stadium in a week as they will take on their rival Akron for a 1 P.M. first kick next Sunday.
