
Kent State Softball to Continue Early Regular Season Slate at Winthrop’s Garnet & Gold Tournament

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Kent State (2-3) continues to their non-conference regular season schedule this weekend at the Garnet & Gold Tournament hosted by Winthrop University. The Golden Flashes will play five games including at least one against Robert Morris University, Le Moyne College, and the host Winthrop University. KSU's fourth and fifth games of the weekend will be determined by seeding based on the results of the first for games.

Last Time Out
Most recently Kent State collected a pair of wins in Wofford College's Terrier invite. On Friday Feb. 6 The Flashes walked off IU Indy to open the season 11-10 before falling to Wofford in the afternoon 11-1 via run rule. Saturday, Feb. 7 saw KSU play another high scoring affair against IU Indy end in a 9-8 decision in favor of the Jaguars. The Blue and Gold then followed it up with a 9-0 run rule victory over Monmouth in five innings to grab their second win of the season. Kent State dropped a 10-4 decision to Wofford on Sunday, Feb. 8 to close out the weekend. Ashlyn Porter led the team with a .563 batting average (9-for-16), recording two doubles, three RBIs, and five runs scored. Brynn Libler hit .529 (9-for-17) with three doubles, three RBIs, six runs scored, and went 2-3 in stolen base attempts. Megan Claerhout batted .429 (6-for-14) and led the team with five RBIs while drawing a trio of walks.
Scouting the Opposition
Winthrop
The Winthrop Eagles enter the weekend 0-4, having been outscored 38-9 in their four contests. The Eagles are batting .188 as a team with 18 hits through four games. Peyton Bryden leads the offense with a .385 average (5-for-13) including a double, a triple, and four RBI. Rebecca Amos matches Bryden's .385 average (5-for-13) and has gone 1-for-2 in stolen base attempts. Aspen King has contributed a .250 average and two RBI. On the mound, sophomore Lonna Addison has been the Eagles' most effective pitcher with a 0-1 record and 3.28 ERA over 10.2 innings pitched, striking out eight batters while allowing eight hits.
Robert Morris
The Robert Morris Colonials will begin the tournament as well as their season against Kent State this Friday. The Colonials were tabbed as the preseason favorite for the first time since joining the Horizon League in 2021. They received six first-place votes and 48 total points in the voting. RMU is coming off winning its first Horizon League Championship in 2025 where it posted a 30-18 (.625) overall record and 16-7 (.696) mark in conference play. The team won three straight playoff games to be crowned conference champs and qualified for NCAA Regionals for the first time since 2005. Under the guidance of eighth-year head coach Jexx Varner, who owns an overall record of 152-153 (.498) and a 79-48 (.622) mark in Horizon League regular season games, RMU returns 14 players from its championship squad. This includes the reigning Horizon League Tournament MVP, Courtney Poulich; the 2025 Co-Freshman of the Year, Mary Brant; and two All-League Second Team selections in Kaylyn Hopf and Kaitlyn Molitoris.
Le Moyne
The Le Moyne College Dolphins come to Rock Hill with a 1-3 record. Offensively, the Dolphins are led by Maddie Martin, who is batting .600 (6-for-10) with three runs scored and has gone 3-for-3 in stolen base attempts. Sydney Nesci has posted a .400 average (4-for-10) with a double and has drawn four walks. Shannon Gavigan contributes a .333 average with four RBI. Le Moyne is hitting .280 as a team with 30 hits and has scored 24 runs over four games. In the circle, Tatum Nessman is 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA over 11.2 innings pitched, recording six strikeouts while allowing 15 hits.
On Deck for the Flashes
Following this weekend, Kent State will turn their attention to the UNC Greensboro Invitational over the weekend of Feb. 20-22. The Golden Flashes will take on Bucknell University, Canisius College, hosting University of North Carolina Greensboro.
