
Kent State Earns Walk-Off Win, Falls to Wofford in Opening Day Split

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Kent State split a pair of games on the opening day of the Terrier Invite on Friday, defeating IU Indy in a back-and-forth slugfest before falling to Wofford in the afternoon. The Golden Flashes (1-1) rallied for an 11-10 victory over the Jaguars in game one before dropping an 11-1 decision to the Terriers in five innings.
Senior Aaralyn Nogay paced the offense in the opener with two hits and two runs scored. Eight different Golden Flashes recorded hits in the 14-hit attack, with Alex Trevena, Brooke Aberle, Caleigh Shaulis, Ashlyn Porter and Gabby Quinn each collecting a pair of hits.
Game 1: Kent State 11, IU Indy 10
IU Indy jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but Kent State responded in the bottom of the second. Caleigh Shaulis led off with a triple to right field and scored on a Gabby Quinn single to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Jaguars extended their lead to 3-1 in the third before Kent State tied it with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Brooke Aberle led off with a single and scored on an Aaralyn Nogay single to center field. After Nogay advanced to third on a throwing error, Brynn Libler drove her in with a single to right field to even the score at 3-3.
Kent State took its first lead in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs. Ashlyn Porter doubled to right field and moved to third on a Gabby Quinn single. Libby Johnson drove in Porter with a sacrifice fly and Alex Trevena followed with an RBI single to left field for a 5-3 advantage.
IU Indy battled back to tie the game at 5-5 with two runs in the top of the fifth on a two-RBI single by T. Candler.
The Jaguars regained the lead with two runs in the sixth to go ahead 7-5, but Kent State responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 9-7 lead. Trevena doubled to left field to plate a run and Aberle followed with an RBI single. Nogay then singled to right field and scored along with Aberle when the ball was misplayed for a two-run error.
IU Indy rallied in the seventh with three runs, including a two-RBI double by R. Rosenbaum, to take a 10-9 lead heading to the bottom of the inning.
Kent State came through in the bottom of the seventh with two runs to walk off with the victory. Miley Anderson pinch ran for Megan Claerhout after a leadoff walk and scored on a two-out error. Caleigh Shaulis singled to load the bases and Kendal Leitner delivered the game-winning single through the left side to bring home the winning run.
Riley Miller earned the win in the circle, pitching 6.1 innings. Ella Johnson picked up the final two outs.
Game 2: Wofford 11, Kent State 1 (5 innings)
Wofford jumped on Kent State early, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Terriers added four more in the second to build a 10-0 lead.
Kent State's lone run came in the top of the third when Aaralyn Nogay walked, stole second and scored on an Ashlyn Porter single to shortstop.
Wofford added a solo home run in the fourth to invoke the run rule after five innings.
The Golden Flashes managed five hits. Nogay, Libler, Porter, Claerhout and Quinn each had one hit.

Kent State will continue play in the Terrier Invite on Saturday, Feb. 7 against IU Indy at 10:00 a.m. and Monmouth at 3:00 p.m.
