
Golden Flashes Earn Shutout Victory in Day Two Split at the Terrier Invite

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Kent State (2-2) split a pair of games on the second day of the Terrier Invite on Saturday, falling to IU Indy in a high-scoring affair before bouncing back with a dominant victory over Monmouth. The Golden Flashes dropped an 9-8 decision to the Jaguars in game one before rolling to a 9-0 win over the Hawks in five innings.
Brynn Libler led the offensive charge with six hits and five runs scored across both games. Aaralyn Nogay had four hits and three runs scored, while Ashlyn Porter added five hits and two runs scored. Megan Claerhout drove in five runs on the day.
Game 1: Kent State 8, IU Indy 9
Kent State struck first in the top of the first when Brynn Libler walked and stole second. Ashlyn Porter followed with an RBI single to right center to give the Golden Flashes a 1-0 lead.
IU Indy answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning on a two-RBI single to take a 2-1 advantage.
The Golden Flashes tied the game at 2-2 in the third inning when Libler doubled to left center and scored on a Porter single through the left side.
IU Indy regained the lead with a run in the fourth on an RBI groundout by to make it 3-2.
Kent State responded with two runs in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. Libler doubled to left center and came around to score on an error by the first baseman after Porter singled. Caleigh Shaulis later scored on a Claerhout RBI single to shortstop.
The Jaguars tied it at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth on a solo home run to left field.
IU Indy broke the game open in the sixth with five runs to take a commanding 9-4 lead. Kent State mounted a rally in the seventh, scoring four runs but falling just short. Libler led off with a double to left field and scored on an error. Gabby Quinn and Claerhout both scored on a Ciara Camacho double to left center, and Alex Trevena delivered a two-RBI single to center field to make it 9-8. The rally ended when Nogay lined out to the pitcher with the tying run on third base.
Game 2: Kent State 9, Monmouth 0 (5 innings)
Kent State wasted no time getting on the board in the bottom of the first. Aaralyn Nogay tripled to left field and scored on a Brynn Libler single up the middle. Porter doubled to left field and scored on an error at second base to give the Golden Flashes a 2-0 lead.
The Golden Flashes extended their lead to 6-0 in the second inning with four runs. Alex Trevena led off with a single through the left side and scored on a Nogay triple to right center. Libler drove in Nogay with an RBI single to center field. After Porter singled to left field, Shaulis reached on an error that allowed Porter and Shaulis to score.
The Blue and Gold then put the game away with three runs in the fourth frame. Porter reached on a fielder's choice and scored when Quinn doubled to right field. Claerhout followed with a two-RBI double to center field to invoke the run rule after five innings.
Riley Miller earned the win in the circle, pitching all five innings and allowing just four hits while striking out two. The Golden Flashes defense played error-free softball behind her. Kent State finished with 11 hits in the victory. Libler went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, Nogay was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two triples, and Claerhout drove in four runs.
On Deck for the Flashes
Kent State will wrap up play against Wofford College on Sunday, Feb. 8. First pitch has been updated to 1:00 p.m. between the Flashes and Terriers.
