KENT, Ohio – Miami (OH) scored in six of seven innings and sent 11 batters to the plate in a decisive seventh to beat Kent State 21-3 Saturday afternoon at Schoonover Stadium, evening the weekend series at one game apiece. The Golden Flashes fell to 19-6 overall and 9-2 in MAC play.
The RedHawks wasted no time, sending eight batters to the plate in the top of the first and scoring five runs before Kent State recorded an out. A double from Marcus Dierks set the table, and the frame included run-scoring hits from Ryan Novak, Evan Appelwick, and Tommy Harrison before Ignacio Gonzalez capped the outburst with a two-run home run to left field, putting Miami up 5-0.
Easton Tumis took the loss, allowing seven runs on six hits while recording just four outs. Kent State used six pitchers in total, with Miami tagging the bullpen for 14 additional runs.
The Flashes showed some fight early. Ripken Reese answered the five-run first with a solo home run to right center in the bottom half, and Luke Matthews plated Brady Marshall with a sacrifice fly in the second to make it 7-2. Matthews added an RBI single in the sixth to account for Kent State's final run.
The RedHawks tacked on runs in the second, third, fourth, and sixth innings before the game got out of hand in the seventh, when eight two-out errors contributed to an eight-run explosion that pushed the final to 21-3 and triggered the mercy rule after seven innings.
Hunter Klotz went 2-for-2 with two doubles to pace Kent State's six-hit effort. Reese finished 1-for-3 with a walk and his team-leading home run.
The series concludes Sunday with the first pitch set for 1 p.m. at Schoonover Stadium.
