
Golden Flashes Swept by Miami (OH)

OXFORD, Ohio – Kent State Softball (14-16, 4-5 MAC) dropped their series ending doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Miami (OH) University. The first game was a hard fought, back-and-forth contest that ended 9-8 with a RedHawk walk-off in extra innings. The Golden Flashes fell by run rule 10-2 in the series finale.
Game 1: Kent State 8, Miami (OH) 9 (9 Inn.)
Kent State jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning. Aaralyn Nogay led off with a bunt single to the catcher and stole second base. Brynn Libler followed with an RBI single to right field to score Nogay and give the Golden Flashes a 1-0 lead. Megan Claerhout then singled to center field to put runners on first and second. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch before Ashlyn Porter drove in Libler with a groundout to second base to extend the lead to 2-0. Gabby Quinn followed with an RBI single to score Claerhout and make it 3-0.
Miami answered with three runs in the bottom of the first inning to tie the game at 3-3.
The Golden Flashes regained the lead in the third inning when Libler singled through the left side and stole second base. After Shaulis walked, Claerhout drew a walk to load the bases. Porter delivered an RBI single through the left side to score Libler and give Kent State a 4-3 advantage.
The Golden Flashes extended their lead to 7-3 in the fourth inning. Brooke Aberle led off with a single through the right side and stole second base. After Nogay grounded out to advance Aberle to third, Libler singled to right field to score Aberle, advancing to second on an error by the right fielder. Shaulis followed with an RBI single o score Libler and make it 6-3. Claerhout drew a walk to put two runners on base and Porter capped the rally with an RBI single up the middle to score Shaulis and extend the lead to 7-3.
Miami cut into the deficit with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to pull within 7-6, then tied the game at 7-7 before taking an 8-7 lead with two runs in the fifth inning.
Kent State tied the game in the sixth inning when Shaulis reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second when Porter singled to second base. Quinn reached on a fielding error by the shortstop that allowed Shaulis to score and tie the game at 8-8.
Miami scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to complete the 9-8 victory.
Game 2: Kent State 2, Miami (OH) 10 (6 Inn.)
Kent State grabbed an early lead in the top of the second inning when Porter led off with a double to right center and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Ciara Camacho followed with an RBI double to right field to score Porter and give the Golden Flashes a 1-0 lead.
Miami answered with six runs in the bottom of the second inning to take control of the game and build a 6-1 lead. The RedHawks added one run in the third inning to extend the advantage to 7-1.
The Golden Flashes cut into the deficit in the fifth inning when Trevena led off with a single through the right side and stole second base. Libler delivered an RBI double to left center to score Trevena and make it 7-2.
Miami added one run in the fifth and a pair in the sixth to complete the 10-2 victory.
On Deck for the Flashes
The Golden Flashes will be back in action during the weekend of April 3-4 hosting Bowling Green State University at Devine Diamond. The series gets underway on Friday, April 3 at 3:00 p.m., and finishes up with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 4 with start times of 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
