DEKALB, Ill. – Kent State Softball (17-21, 7-10 MAC) fell in both halves of a doubleheader at Northern Illinois University on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Flashes were bested in a close 9-8 ballgame to start the day before the second game saw a 15-3 decision in NIU's favor. Junior outfielder Aaralyn Nogay tallied a trio of stolen bases in the first game of the day to stamp her name in program history.
Game 1: Kent State 8, NIU 9
Kent State struck first in the second inning when Ashlyn Porter doubled to center and eventually scored on a Ciara Camacho sacrifice fly. The Flashes then broke the game open in the fourth as Gabby Quinn doubled to center to score Porter, Alex Trevena followed with an RBI single to score Quinn, and Brooke Aberle capped the rally with a two-run double, pushing the lead to 5-1.
With the game tied at five heading to the seventh, Kent State delivered its biggest blow of the day. Aaralyn Nogay and Brynn Libler both reached on hit by pitches. Caleigh Shaulis then launched a three-run home run to center field to put the Flashes ahead 8-5.
Northern Illinois answered in the bottom of the seventh, however, scoring four times to complete the comeback and hand Kent State the defeat.
Aaralyn Nogay notched stolen bases in the first, fifth, and seventh innings to break the single season Kent State Softball program record with 27 total and counting.
Porter had a strong all-around game with two hits and two runs scored. Quinn contributed two hits and an RBI, while Aberle's two-run double was the key blow in the fourth. Shaulis' seventh-inning home run was the offensive highlight of the doubleheader.
Game 2: Kent State 3, NIU 15 (5 Inn.)
The night got away from the Flashes early in the contest with Northern Illinois scoring five in the first and ten more in the second to put the game out of reach.
Kent State did show some life in the first inning. Brynn Libler drew a walk and scored on an RBI single by Megan Claerhout, and Caleigh Shaulis following a hit by a pitch also came around to score on an RBI single by Ashlyn Porter, giving the Flashes a 2-0 lead. Kent State added a third run in the third frame when Libler scored on a passed ball after reaching on a walk.
