COLUMBUS, Ohio — A 2-under 70 from Isabella Goyette and an even-par 72 from Leon Takagi led the Kent State Dr. Paula Treckel women's golf team to a tournament-best 2-over 290 in Friday afternoon's second round, vaulting the Golden Flashes from sixth place into second at the Therese Hession Buckeye Invitational at Ohio State University Golf Club's Scarlet Course.
Kent State sits at 16-over 592 through 36 holes, three strokes behind host Ohio State and one ahead of Iowa State. The Flashes' second-round 290 was the low team round of the day, as Kent State leapfrogged Xavier, Michigan State, Iowa State, and Indiana.
The Golden Flashes opened the tournament Friday morning with a 14-over 302, settling into sixth place through 18 holes. Takagi, playing in her final regular-season tournament as a Golden Flash, paced the Flashes with a 2-over 74 to sit tied for eighth individually after the morning wave, while Matthews, Babicová, and Goyette all posted matching 4-over 76s. Kedronová added a 7-over 79 as the team's fifth.
The afternoon brought the surge. Goyette turned in the round of the day for Kent State, carding six birdies against a bogey and triple bogey on her second eighteen for a 2-under 70 that moved her from 18th into a tie for third at 2-over 146. Takagi matched her morning 74 with a 72, weathering two bogeys on her opening nine of the second round before answering with a pair of birdies on the final nine to sit tied for third alongside Goyette at 2-over. Matthews fired a 1-over 73 that included five birdies, closing her round with birdies on three of the final four holes to move into a tie for 11th at 5-over 149. Babicová added two birdies in her afternoon round and sits 19th at 7-over 151, while Kedronová carded a 79 to sit 46th at 14-over 158.
The final round is scheduled for Saturday morning with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
