KENT, Ohio — Kent State kept its momentum rolling Wednesday night at Schoonover Stadium, cruising past Mercyhurst 13-2 in seven innings to improve to 29-10 overall. Three home runs and a five-run fourth inning highlighted another dominant offensive performance for the Golden Flashes.
Kent State opened the scoring in the first when Brady Marshall singled, stole second and third, and came home on a Brody Williams RBI single. The Flashes broke the game open in the second with a three-run inning, as Max Humphrey reached on a bunt single, Grady Mee walked, and Luke Matthews capped the frame with a three-run home run to left field to push the lead to 4-0.
The third inning produced four more runs. Solitaria led off with a solo home run to right center, Williams singled and stole his way to third, and Humphrey added an RBI single before Mee launched a two-run home run to right center to make it 8-0.
Mercyhurst scored in the fourth on a wild pitch and added another in the seventh, but Kent State answered with five runs in the bottom of the fourth to put the game well out of reach. Marshall reached on a hit by pitch, Ripken Reese walked, and after Marshall stole home on a catcher's error, Alejandro Covas singled home Reese, Mee drew a bases-loaded RBI walk. Matthews added an RBI single before another wild pitch plated the fifth run of the inning to extend the lead to 13-1.
Alex Alberico earned the first win of his career (1-0), retiring five of the seven batters he faced with a strikeout over 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Matthews led all hitters with a home run, four RBIs, and two hits across three at-bats. Mee was 1-for-2 with a home run, three RBIs, and two runs scored while drawing two walks. Humphrey went 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Williams finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and two stolen bases. Solitaria homered and scored once before giving way to a pinch hitter. Covas added an RBI single and a stolen base, and Marshall stole three bases and scored twice.
Kent State hits the road this weekend to take on Western Michigan in a pivotal MAC series.
