KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Kent State baseball has a pivotal Mid-American Conference series at Western Michigan this weekend, Friday, April 24, through Sunday, April 26.
The Golden Flashes enter the weekend at 29-10 overall and 15-6 in MAC play, the best winning percentage in the conference and 12th-best in the nation at .744. Western Michigan sits at 20-16 overall and 14-7 in the MAC, second in the conference standings.Â
Kent State has built its season on pitching and discipline, leading the MAC in ERA (5.02), WHIP (1.36), and strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.28), while ranking second in the conference in on-base percentage (.417) and stolen bases (96). The Flashes score 8.3 runs per game, second in the MAC and 28th nationally, and have drawn 219 walks as a team.
The Broncos rank first in the MAC in fielding percentage (.980), lead the conference in sacrifice bunts (26), and carry a 5.76 team ERA, second in the MAC behind Kent State.Â
Kent State's Offense
The Flashes are hitting .290 as a team with 49 home runs, 219 walks, and 96 stolen bases. Sawyer Solitaria (.322, 11 HR, 34 RBI, .455 OBP) continues to lead the way, ranking third in the MAC in home runs. Ripken Reese (.313, eight HR, 32 RBI) has matched Solitaria's production almost stride for stride, and Micah Rienstra-Kiracofe (.317, 31 RBI, .449 OBP) gives the heart of the order three legitimate threats.
Brady Marshall (.286, .467 OBP) remains one of the MAC's most dangerous table-setters with 35 runs scored and 14 hit-by-pitches; his 0.45 HBP per game ranks fourth nationally. Nolan Belcher (.312, six HR), Brody Williams (.303, 35 RBI), and Luke Matthews (.271, 14 SB) round out a lineup that has no soft spots from top to bottom. Western Michigan's staff has issued 193 walks in 304.2 innings, and Kent State's patient approach figures to generate consistent traffic on the bases all weekend.
Western Michigan's Most Dangerous Weapon
No player in college baseball has been more difficult to get out this season than Tanner Mally. The outfielder is batting .485, first in the nation, with 63 hits, a .599 on-base percentage, and just five strikeouts in 34 games. His toughest-to-strike-out ratio of 26.0 leads both the MAC and the country, and his 19 hit-by-pitches are tied for first in the conference. There is no easy way to navigate around Mally, and Kent State's staff will need to execute precisely every time he steps in.
Beyond Mally, Drew Howard (.370, .476 OBP) is one of the MAC's most productive hitters, and Michael Maloney (.346, six HR, 41 RBI) leads the Broncos in RBI. Avery Thielman (.283, five HR, 28 RBI) provides additional run-production depth, and Western Michigan's contact-oriented approach with just 23 home runs as a team, last in the MAC, means the Broncos will look to manufacture runs through aggressive baserunning and timely hitting rather than the long ball.
The Pitching Matchups
Friday — Tumis vs. Vriesenga
Easton Tumis (6-2, 5.26 ERA, 49.2 IP) leads the MAC in walks allowed per nine innings (1.81, 46th nationally) and brings a 3.70 strikeout-to-walk ratio, fifth in the conference, to the series opener. Zach Vriesenga counters for Western Michigan at 2-3 with a 5.59 ERA across seven starts and 46.2 innings. He has struck out 36 batters but has issued 29 walks and allowed seven home runs, giving Kent State's disciplined lineup plenty of opportunities to work counts and do damage early.
Saturday — Caughey vs. Carlisle
Ciaran Caughey (4-2, 4.50 ERA) has struck out 53 batters in 48.0 innings with a 4.08 strikeout-to-walk ratio, second in the MAC, and his 9.94 strikeouts per nine innings ranks fourth in the conference. Sam Carlisle counters for Western Michigan at 4-2 with a 3.61 ERA and 56 strikeouts across 47.1 innings, with his 10.65 strikeouts per nine innings ranking second in the MAC. Friday sets up as the most balanced pitching duel of the series.
Sunday — Rabatin vs. Kidd
Ben Rabatin (5-1, 4.88 ERA, 48.0 IP) looks to close out the series. Ricky Kidd has been Western Michigan's most consistent starter, going 5-1 with a 4.47 ERA and 56.1 innings pitched, the most on the staff.Â
