Kent State Sweeps Undefeated Columbia to Complete Unbeaten Weekend at Laker Invite

ERIE, Pa. – Kent State removed Columbia from the list of unbeatens with a 3-0 sweep (25-23, 25-14, 25-16) on Saturday to finish 3-0 at the Laker Invitational.
The Golden Flashes won nine of 11 sets overall during the weekend and improve to 5-4 heading into the final week of non-conference competition.
In a back-and-forth first set, sophomore Macie Moreland recorded a kill off the block to make it 21-21 for the 11th tie of the set. Senior Mercedez Brown followed with a solo block and added a kill for a two-point advantage. Columbia was able to tie it again but sent the ensuing serve long to make it 24-23 Kent State. The Lions missed wide on the next point to give the opener to the Flashes.
The teams split the first 18 points in the second before Kent State scored seven in a row and closed with a 16-5 run.
The third set began similarly with the score being tied at 6-6. The Flashes then used a 10-3 run to gain separation and closed the match with a kill by freshman Ashley Verhey.
Senior Christina Vigil had a team-high 24 assists and distributed the ball well to Kent State's attacking arsenal. Brown finished with 11 kills, Moreland had nine and junior Nadia Miller and Verhey had eight each.
Junior Lesley Furuta once again led the defense with 15 digs. Junior Hailey Brenner contributed 10 digs.
Kent State finishes non-league action this coming week with a home match against Cleveland State on Thursday, Sept. 17 and then travels to Youngstown State on Friday, Sept. 18.
