Brown Records Career-High 21 Kills in Non-Conference Finale at YSU

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Senior Mercedez Brown had a career night as Kent State closed non-conference action with a 3-1 (14-25, 25-21, 24-26, 16-25) setback to Youngstown State on Friday evening.
Brown finished the match with a career-high 21 kills, the second most by a Mid-American Conference attacker in a four-set match this season, and added 13 digs for her third double-double of her senior campaign.
After totaling just eight kills as a team in the first set, Brown recorded seven on only nine attempts in the second to help the Golden Flashes even the match. Kent State trailed 15-13 at the media timeout and prevented its host from scoring consecutive points the rest of the set.
The Flashes rallied from a late four-point deficit and took a 23-22 lead on an ace by junior Hailey Brenner, but the Penguins got kills on the next two points to regain the lead. Brown tied it with her seventh kill of the set before YSU won the next two points to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Kent State led early in the fourth before a 13-3 run allowed the Penguins to close out the victory.
Junior Lesley Furuta tallied a team-high 16 digs to lead the Flashes on defense. Senior Christina Vigil added 13 digs and 34 assists for her second double-double in as many nights.
Kent State (6-5) opens MAC play next week with a home match against rival Akron on Wednesday, Sept. 23 and a road contest at Buffalo on Friday, Sept. 25.
