AMHERST, Mass. – The Golden Flashes Soccer team fell in a close loss in their first ever trip to the University of Massachusetts on Saturday by a score of 1-0.

Much like the starts to a lot of their games this year, Kent State held their opponent scoreless for the beginning of the game as KSU and the minutewomen held at a scoreless draw at the half.

Early in the second half, the Flashes committed a penalty within the box to give UMass a chance at a score with a penalty kick. The minutewomen capitalized on that opportunity as Amelia Deren put the ball in the back of the net in the 51st minute for what would be the only goal of the game after nearly 40 more minutes of great defense from both squads.

In a game where shots were hard to come by, the Flashes held the slight advantage in that category by a count of 6-5 while both teams had two shots on goal. The minutewomen produced four opportunities from corner kicks while the blue and gold had just one. Leah Shaffer played all 90 minutes in net as the goalkeeper for the Flashes as she produced one save while allowing a goal as well on five shots faced.

Up Next

Kent State Soccer will return home for a big test against the two-time defending MAC Champions in Western Michigan. First kick is set for 7 P.M. on Thursday at Zoeller field at Dix Stadium.
