KENT, Ohio- The Kent State Soccer team will face one of their toughest tests of the Mid-American Conference schedule on Thursday night when the two-time defending conference Western Michigan Broncos come to town for a 1 P.M. kick.
Last Time Out
The Golden Flashes Soccer team fell in a close loss in their first ever trip to the University of Massachusetts on Saturday by a score of 1-0.
Much like the starts to a lot of their games this year, Kent State held their opponent scoreless for the beginning of the game as KSU and the minutewomen held at a scoreless draw at the half.Â
Early in the second half, the Flashes committed a penalty within the box to give UMass a chance at a score with a penalty kick. The minutewomen capitalized on that opportunity as Amelia Deren put the ball in the back of the net in the 51st minute for what would be the only goal of the game after nearly 40 more minutes of great defense from both squads.
In a game where shots were hard to come by, the Flashes held the slight advantage in that category by a count of 6-5 while both teams had two shots on goal. The minutewomen produced four opportunities from corner kicks while the blue and gold had just one. Leah Shaffer played all 90 minutes in net as the goalkeeper for the Flashes as she produced one save while allowing a goal as well on five shots faced.Â
Scouting Western Michigan
The Broncos enter their fourth game of the conference schedule unbeaten so far with a record of 2-0-1, coming into the game 4-2-4 overall. Western Michigan and Kent State come into the matchup with one common opponent so far which is Toledo. The Flashes fell on the road to Toledo by one goal, while the Broncos went up to the Glass City a week later and defeated the Rockets by a score of 3-0.
Leading the Broncos on offense will Tessa Fagerson who has scored 11 points this season off of four goals and three assists. Kaiya Stewart has recorded three goals and an assist this season while Camryn Huhn and Sophia Bowman have each contributed two goals. Meredith Vance also operates as a great distributor for the Western Michigan offense as she has produced four assists for far through 10 games.
In net for WMU will most likely be Reagan Sulaver as she has started eight games for the Broncos this season. In those eight games she has produced 25 saves while allowing just eight goals on 67 shots faced. She has also produced two shutouts in three wins.
Series History
Sunday's game will be the 29th all-time meeting between the two schools. Kent State currently leads the series with a count of 14-12-4 while the Broncos have won the last three meetings in the previous two seasons.
Up Next
After a home game against the Broncos, the Golden Flashes will head back on the road where they will head to Ypsilanti to take on the Eastern Michigan Eagles. First kick is set for 1 P.M. on Sunday.
