Having played more minutes than anyone in Kent State history, DeAndre Haynes ('06) has now enters his third season as part of head coach Rob Senderoff’s staff after returning to the sideline at his alma-mater as an assistant coach prior to the 2012-13 season.
"We are excited to have DeAndre back at Kent State," said Senderoff. “There is no one better qualified who can share the Kent State vision and tradition of success with our current student-athletes and potential recruits. I've known DeAndre and seen him grow and develop from a 17-year-old kid into the hard-working, driven professional he is today."
Kent State's all-time leader in assists (625) and steals (229), Haynes entered the coaching ranks after wrapping up a six-year professional career with FIBA Europe that included stops in Belgium, Hungary, Germany and Finland. Most recently while playing for Namika Lappeenranta in Finland during the 2011-12 season, he averaged 14.2 points, 4.8 assists and 4.8 rebounds per game.
"This is a tremendous opportunity and I want to thank Coach Senderoff and the entire Kent State Administration for the chance to carry the proud winning tradition of the program forward," said Haynes.
Haynes was the first player in Kent State history named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Year when he earned the honor in 2006. An Honorable Mention All-American that year as well, he lead the Golden Flashes to the MAC regular season and tournament titles and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
The 6-2 native of Detroit was a four-year starter at point guard, totaling 89 wins and four postseason appearances during his time at Kent State. He currently ranks 12th in school history with 1,259 career points, while his 114 career starts are second all-time.
