Playing Experience |
Haut has been a proud alum and representative of Kent State hoops during most of the 21st century, playing on some of the greatest teams in program history before beginning a now 15 year coaching career. In 2017-18, Haut enters his 10th total season on the bench for Kent State.
Haut has helped deliver four Mid-American Conference Championships to Kent State as a coach, in addition two as a student-athlete. The program has won 64 percent of their games with Haut on the bench and will cross 200 wins with him in 2017-18. In Kent State’s six trips to the NCAA Tournament, Haut has been involved as a player or coach in five.
During his two stints on the Kent State staff (2005-08, 2011-present), Haut has worked primarily with post players and taken a lead on defense. Haut has helped develop multiple All-MAC forwards, including one of the greatest players in Kent State history, Jimmy Hall. In three years working with Haut, Hall was a three-time All-MAC honoree and the leader in scoring, rebounding and assists on a MAC Championship team.
At Hall’s peak in 2016-17, Hall broke the Kent State record for points scored at 683 points. His 267 made two pointers led the nation by double digits, while also ranking in the national top-5 with 148 offensive rebounds. He finished with career highs of 91 assists, 48 blocks and 32 steals.
The Kent State hoops record book is packed with post players Haut has worked with. Joining Hall on the list is Justin Greene, who was coached by Haut as a senior to a First Team All-MAC Season. Hall and Greene make up two of the top-5 scorers in rebounders in program history. Other notable post players who have played for Haut include 2016 Defensive Player of the Year Khaliq Spicer, 2008 MAC Defensive Player of the Year and MAC Tournament MVP Haminn Quaintance, and 2008 All-MAC honoree Mike Scott.
As good as the Flashes have been in the post over Haut’s 10 years, they have been just as dominant defensively. In addition to the multiple MAC Defensive Players of the Year, Kent State picked up another honor in 2016-17 when senior Deon Edwin was named to the All-MAC Defensive Team. The Flashes have been synonymous with lock down defense in recent years, playing a major impact during the 2016-17 run. Kent State held eight of their last nine MAC opponents in the 60’s or better, going 8-1 in that span. Over the years, the record book has been rewritten, with over half of the top-7 shot blockers in program history playing under Haut.
In between Haut’s two stints at his alma mater, he served as an assistant coach at TCU from 2008-11. While at TCU, Haut was primarily responsible for the development of the team’s guards. In each of his first two seasons with the Horned Frogs, he helped guide a pair of All-Mountain West Conference selections in point guards Hank Thorns (2010-11 Third Team) and Ronnie Moss (2009-10 Second Team). Thorns was also named to the Bob Cousy Award Watch List.
Prior to his coaching career, Haut had an illustrious four year career with the Golden Flashes, helping lay the foundation for a championship program from 2000-04. Over four years, Haut helped the Flashes go 98-34, win the East Division every year and make four straight appearances in the MAC Championship game. Haut played a massive role in the team’s famous trip to the 2002 NCAA Elite Eight, but also made the second round in 2001 and was selected to compete in the NIT twice.
The Lansing, Mich. native was one of the top 3-point marksmen in school history and concluded his playing career ranked second behind only Trevor Huffman in the Kent State record books with 200 three-pointers. Since becoming a coach, he’s guided two players in Randal Holt and Devareaux Manley to top that mark.
Following his highly successful playing days, Haut launched his coaching career as a graduate assistant coach at Western Kentucky during the 2004-05 season.
A 2004 graduate of Kent State, he earned a bachelor’s degree in finance and is a member of the NABC (National Association of Basketball Coaches). He resides locally with his wife, Tanicius, and his step-daughter, Kamya. Kamya is a freshman at Kent State University and is a member of the Track & Field/ Cross Country programs.
