Jana Ashley joined Kent State University as Athletic Academic Counselor in August 2022.
She serves as monitor of the academic progress for Kent State’s Men’s Basketball, Women’s Soccer, Field Hockey, Softball, and Women’s Golf programs. Ashley advises her assigned student-athletes on course selection and registration, program requirements, and transfer credits, across various programs and colleges. Among other tasks she also partners with compliance sta? to certify continuing eligibility under NCAA and institutional standards and meets with prospective students and families on recruiting visits to further explain academic resources available and expectations at KSU.
Under Ashley’s guidance her programs and the department have seen various academic successes and milestones. She led Men’s Basketball to its highest term (Fall 2022, Fall 2024) and highest cumulative (Fall 2022, Fall 2023, Spring 2025) GPAs in program history, and to the NABC Honor Roll for the 2024-2025 Season (first time in program history). Ashley also led Women’s Soccer to their highest term and cumulative GPAs in program history (Fall 2024) and led Field Hockey to their highest term GPAs in program history (Fall 2024) and highest academic year GPA in the MAC (24-25). While a part of the academic support staff, Kent State student-athletes have collectively set new records for highest term and cumulative department GPA in recorded history (Fall 2022, Spring 2023, Fall 2023, Fall 2024, and Spring 2025).
In addition to her role in Academics, Ashley serves as ESPN+ Color Analyst for all home and select away Kent State Men’s Basketball games showcasing her knowledge as a former head coach.
Prior to her time at Kent State, Ashley served as Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Clarion University from June 2014 to August 2022. Under her leadership the Golden Eagles saw a 13-win Improvement from her first year to her fourth year. In 2018-2019 they recorded the longest winning streak to begin a season since 2004. Ashley also achieved the program’s longest program win streak since 2004-2005, the first overall winning record for the program since 2009-2010, and the most conference wins and first winning conference record since 2007-2008 (16-17).
Before Clarion, Ashley served as Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach for three prior programs including Iona College from June 2013 to April 2014, George Mason University from April 2008 to June 2013, and her graduate alma mater Radford University from July 2005 to April 2008.
A student-athlete herself, Ashley attended the University of North Alabama graduating in 2002. She went on to earn her master’s in education from Radford University in 2005 where she served as Graduate Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach.
