After a strong defensive performance during Kent State's 39-17 homecoming football victory over Army last Saturday afternoon, Nick Cuthbert was named the Mid-American Conference East Division Defensive Player of the Week.
In his first career start, the Chesterland, Ohio, native led both sides with 16 total tackles and 12 solo tackles. During much of the game, he shadowed Army’s pitchman on option plays, preventing big gains from a Black Knights’ rushing attack that ranked third in the nation. After averaging 40.0 points in its first two games against MAC opponents, the Army offense was held to 17 points and just 35 yards passing.
A walk-on, Cuthbert transferred to Kent State last year from Georgia Tech, where he gained valuable experience against a triple-option offense. He saw his first career action at the beginning of this season on special teams and has gradually seen more time on defense.
