KSU CAREER: Earned a Varsity “K” as a linebacker on the Golden Flash grid squad in 1957…Received his B.S. in history from Kent in 1959…POST KSU CAREER: Has established himself as one of the most successful college football coaches in the country…Began his coaching career as an assistant at Iowa in 1960 (where he earned his M.S. in education in 1961)…Followed that with assistant coaching positions at William & Mary (1961-63, Connecticut (1964-65), South Carolina (1966-67) and Ohio State (1969)…Served as the head coach at William & Mary (1969-71) and North Carolina State (1972-75) before being named head coach of the NFL’s New York Jets, a position he held for one season…Returned to the collegiate ranks as the head coach at Arkansas (1977-83) and moved on to Minnesota (1984-85) before being named head coach at Notre Dame in 1985…Led the Fighting Irish to the number-one national ranking in 1988 with an unblemished 12-0 record and nearly duplicated that feat this season with a 12-1 mark…In 20 seasons as a head coach, Holtz has compiled a 153-76-5 record (.650)…His teams have made 15 post-season bowl appearances, including 10 in a row (1972-82) and have a 7-5-2 mark (he did not coach Minnesota in the 1985 Independence Bowl because he already accepted the Notre Dame job)…Was named the Southwest Conference Coach of the Year in 1979…Selected National Coach of the Year in 1977 by the United State Football Writers Association.
