In chilly upper-50 to low-60 degree weather, the Kent State University mens golf team will tee off its third of four fall tournaments this Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 6-7, at the Windon Memorial Classic. North Shore Country Club, a par-72, 7,031-yard course, will feature three rounds and 54 holes of competition. Kent State has won the tournament twice in its seven-year history.
Scheduled to compete are the University of Arizona, No. 25 University of California, the University of California-Davis, the University of Illinois, KENT STATE, Louisiana State University, Michigan State University, No. 10 University of Minnesota, the University of North Florida, host Northwestern University, the University of Notre Dame, Oklahoma State University, Purdue University, Rice University, Southern Methodist University, Stanford University and the University of Toledo.
The tournament will also feature three Golfweek/Sagarin top-25 individuals in No. 9 Justin Smith and No. 24 Ryan Paulson from Minnesota and No. 25 Joe Affrunti from Illinois.
KENT STATE TIES FOR NINTH AT INVERNESS: Three of the five Golden Flashes linksters saved their best rounds for last to tie then-No. 24 Minnesota for ninth of 15 teams at the Inverness Intercollegiate at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. For the second straight tournament, junior Peter Laws (Mississauga, Ontario/Our Lady of Mount Carmel) led the team, carding a 74-78-75 for a 227 aggregate, good for 24th place.
Freshman Marc Bourgeois (Dieppe, New Brunswick/Matheiu-Martin) had a team-best 71 in the third round and a 228 overall to tie for 27th in his first official collegiate competition. Senior Chris Miller (New Philadelphia, Ohio/New Philadelphia) had a 77-78-74=229, sophomore Ryan Yip (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Carroll) scored a 78-76-77=231 and sophomore Joe Meglen (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) had a 83-86-80=249 to round out the scoring for Kent State.
Then-No. 4 University of California-Los Angeles won the team title with an 886, and the Bruins' John Merrick won the individual title, carding a 71-74-71=216.
FLASHES FINISH IN UPPER HALF OF KIAWAH: The Kent State mens golf team finished sixth in the 14-team field at the Cleveland Golf Kiawah Intercollegiate at Turtle Point Golf Course in Kiawah Island, S.C. Sept. 9. Junior Peter Laws led the team, finishing tied for third with rounds of 71-70 for a 141 aggregate, six strokes off the pace set by Georgia Southerns Aron Price. Senior Chris Miller, the only other KSU golfer to finish in the top 20, tied for 14th with 76-70 for a 146 aggregate.
Rounding out the top four for the Flashes were sophomore Ryan Yip 77-75=152 and junior Joe Hurtuk 78-77=155. The University of Kentucky took home the team title.
SUMMER RECAP: Kent State University mens golfer Peter Laws won the 81st Ontario Mens Amateur Championship July 20 by two strokes over Shawn LaFontaine.
Laws, one of three players under par for the tournament, had rounds of 70-70-67-72=279 for the two-stroke margin at the Mississauga Golf and Country Club in his hometown. Laws and teammate Joe Hurtuk also competed in the U.S. Amateur Championship Aug. 20 in Oakmont, Pa.
Laws had a successful summer, as he also won the individual title at the Copa de las Americas Tournament in Bayamon, Puerto Rico June 28. He had rounds of 70-69-75-75=289 to win by five shots over Ryan Moore of the United States. Laws also helped Team Canada win by 11 shots over the United States in the team competition.
Steve Lohmeyer (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) won two amateur tournaments in the span of two weeks. He won the Mid-Ohio Amateur with an 11-under par score and won the Columbus event on the State Farm Collegiate Players Tour with rounds of 71-70-71=212 to win by five strokes over the University of Louisvilles Will Hanna.
2002-03 RECAP: Kent State won four tournaments in the spring, including the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Championships for the 11th time in the last 13 years and advanced to the NCAA Central Regional in Manhattan, Kan., finishing tied for 17th.
The Golden Flashes return all five competitors from the conference and regional tournament to the 2003-04 squad. The Kent State mens golf team won its 14th MAC championship in school history with a two-stroke victory over Miami University May 3 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill. It was the closest finish since the 1957 championships, not counting the tie in 1992.
Head Coach Herb Page earned his 10th MAC Coach of the Year honor and his fifth in the last six seasons. Laws was named to the PING All-Midwest Region Team. He and Yip were named to the All-MAC First Team, while Yip earned Kent States second straight MAC Freshman of the Year honor and fifth in school history. Hurtuk was named to the All-MAC Second Team.
UP NEXT: The Golden Flashes will play on Oct. 27-28, in the Country Club of Louisiana Intercollegiate in Baton Rouge, La., with LSU as host.
