The outstanding summer for the Kent State University mens golf program continued this past weekend as former Golden Flashes finished first and second in the Canadian Tours MTS Classic Sunday (July 13) in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
- Jon Mills, a first-team All-American and the Mid-American Conference Golfer of the Year in 2001, recorded his first professional victory by carding a nine-under 275 (67-65-72-71) on the par-71 Pine Ridge course. He finished three shots of ahead of runner-up and fellow Kent State graduate Bryan DeCorso, the 1995 MAC Golfer of the Year and an honorable mention All-American, who fired rounds of 67-73-70-68=278.
- Mills, who began the final round with a one-stroke lead, chipped in for eagle on the par-5 second hole and never looked back.
- One week ago, former KSU golfer Ben Curtis, the 2000 MAC Golfer of the Year and a second-team All-American, tied for 13th place at the 100th Western Open outside Chicago to qualify for the British Open July 17-20 in Sandwich, England. Rising junior Peter Laws (Mississauga, Ontario/Our Lady of Mount Carmel) previously won the individual title at the Copa de las Americas Tournament in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, June 28 in leading Team Canada to the team championship in the event.
