SANDWICH, England -- Former All-America Kent State University golfer Ben Curtis posted a one-under score of 70 and is in a tie for third place after the third round of the 132nd British Open Championship at Royal St. Georges. He has fired rounds of 72-72-70=214 and trails Thomas Bjorn of Denmark by two shots entering Sundays final round. Curtis had four birdies on the day, including three on the back nine to shoot 32 on the inward half.
- Davis Love III is in second place at level par and then a whos who of golf is tied with Curtis at one over. The foursome consists of Tiger Woods, Sergio Garcia, Kenny Perry and Vijay Singh.
- After a bogey on the first hole, Curtis made four straight pars before another dropped shot at six sent him to four over for the championship. Curtis then birdied the reachable par-5 seventh hole but bogeyed the ninth hole to finish his front nine at three-over par.
- Curtis rattled off the first of three birdies on the back nine at the par-4 10th hole. After four pars, he then made a 20-footer for birdie on 15 and another long putt for birdie on 17. Then with the cameras of ABC Sports watching, Curtis calmly got up and down for par on 18 to wrap up his round of 70.
- I dont want to sound cocky, but really seeing Ben do something like this doesnt surprise me at all, Kent State Director of Golf and Head Mens Golf Coach Herb Page said. When he first got to Kent, a lot of people said he has the type of game to win the (U.S.) Open ... and I think the same thing goes for a tournament like this because he hits it so straight.
- Curtis will play the final round in the fourth-to-last group, paired with Wales Philip Price at 8:50 a.m. EDT. Coverage of the British Open begins at 6 a.m. EDT on TNT Sports and moves to ABC at 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. EDT.
- At Kent State, Curtis was a three-time All-America performer, earning honorable mention in 1998 and second team honors in 1999 and 2000, one of just two three-time honorees in school history. He is Kent States all-time leader in career top-10 finishes with 28 and the career leader with a 72.23 stroke average.
- In 1999, Curtis was a semifinalist at the U.S. Amateur Championship at Pebble Beach Golf Links, losing to the eventual champion, David Gossett. That summer, Curtis was the No.1-ranked amateur player in the United States.
