Laws, Wedding Qualify for U.S. Amateur Championships

KENT, Ohio -- Kent State University mens golfer Peter Laws (Mississauga, Ontario/Our Lady of Mount Carmel) and womens golfer Gabby Wedding (Wilmington, Ohio/Wilmington) have qualified for their respective U.S. Amateur Championships. Laws will head to Oakmont, Pa., and the Oakmont Country Club Aug. 18-24 while Wedding travels to the Philadelphia Country Club in Gladwyne, Pa., Aug 4-10.

Laws qualified for the U.S. Amateur in Syracuse, N.Y., at the Radisson Greens Golf Club July 28. Laws ended up in a four-way tie for first place with a two-round total of 141 after chipping in for eagle on the 36th hole. Laws then won one of two spots in a playoff to head to his second straight U.S. Amateur. Laws now will play in the British, Canadian and United States Amateur championships in the same summer. He also won the Copa de las Americas Tournament in Puerto Rico and the Ontario Amateur in Hamilton..

Laws was an All-MAC First Team selection in 2003, helping the Golden Flashes to a Mid-American Conference (MAC) championship and a berth in the NCAA Regionals. He led Kent State with a 72.97 stroke average and was named to the PING All-Midwest Region squad.

Wedding actually was an alternate after shooting 73 at Cincinnati Golf Club July 14, but has been added after withdraws in the field. The 2002 All-MAC First Team selection also has had a great summer, advancing to the second round of the U.S. Womens Amateur Public Links and making it to the quarterfinals of the Ohio Womens Amateur last weekend.

Wedding helped Kent State win its fifth MAC Championship in her sophomore season. She had a 76.38 stroke average and finished third at the MACs with rounds of 76-71-77=224. Wedding had four top five finishes during the season.
