The 2003-04 Kent State University mens golf team will put its first tee in the ground this Monday, Sept. 8, at the Cleveland Golf Kiawah Intercollegiate. The two-day event will feature 54 holes of competition between some of the premier programs in the nation.
The University of Alabama Birmingham, Charleston Southern Unversity, the College of Charleston, Florida State University, Georgia Southern University, Georgia State University, Southern Methodist University, the University of Kentucky, the University of Maryland, the University of Mississippi, the University of South Carolina, the University of South Carolina-Aiken, the University of Virginia and Vanderbilt University are all scheduled to compete.
SUMMER RECAP: Kent State University mens golfer Peter Laws (Mississauga, Ontario/Our Lady of Mount Carmel) won the 81st Ontario Mens Amateur Championship July 20 by two strokes over Shawn LaFontaine.
Laws, one of three players under par for the tournament, had rounds of 70-70-67-72=279 for the two-stroke margin at the Mississauga Golf and Country Club in his hometown. Laws and teammate Joe Hurtuk (Bedford, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) also competed in the U.S. Amateur Championship Aug. 20 in Oakmont, Pa.
Laws had a successful summer, as he also won the individual title at the Copa de las Americas Tournament in Bayamon, Puerto Rico June 28. He had rounds of 70-69-75-75=289 to win by five shots over Ryan Moore of the United States. Laws also helped Team Canada win by 11 shots over the United States in the team competition.
Steve Lohmeyer (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) won two amateur tournaments in the span of two weeks. He won the Mid-Ohio Amateur with an 11-under par score and won the Columbus event on the State Farm Collegiate Players Tour with rounds of 71-70-71=212 to win by five strokes over the University of Louisvilles Will Hanna.
2002-03 RECAP: Kent State won four tournaments in the spring, including the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Championships for the 11th time in the last 13 years and advanced to the NCAA Central Regional in Manhattan, Kan., finishing tied for 17th.
The Golden Flashes return all five competitors from the conference and regional tournament to the 2003-04 squad. The Kent State mens golf team won its 14th MAC championship in school history with a two-stroke victory over Miami University May 3 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill. The Golden Flashes also won their 11th title under head coach Herb Page. It was the closest finish since the 1957 championships, not counting the tie in 1992.
The action was back-and-forth between the Golden Flashes and RedHawks. Sophomore Peter Laws holed a birdie putt on 18 to give the Golden Flashes a two-stroke advantage. Sophomore Joe Hurtuks par on the 18th sealed the victory for Kent State. Laws finished in a tie for third place with rounds of 79-76-68-69=292. This follows Laws 66 in last years final round. Sophomore Steve Lohmeyer also shot a 69 in the final round and had rounds of 78-73-72-69=292 and tied for third place.
Junior Chris Miller (New Philadelphia, Ohio/New Philadelphia) tied for 14th place at the MAC Championship with scores of 73-75-74-75=297. Freshman Ryan Yip (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Carroll) tied for 19th place with scores of 72-77-79-76=304. Junior and top team finisher at the 2001 MAC Championship Sean Howell (Erie, Pa./McDowell) had a 178 in the record-breaking Big Red Classic win. The teams 271 on the second day of play broke the school mark for single round low. Sophomore Matt Boumphrey (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/West Geauga) had a season average of 78 and freshmen J.D. Schonhoft (Canton, Ohio/Central Catholic) and Joe Meglen (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) recorded averages 77.33 and 80.83, respectively.
Head Coach Herb Page earned his 10th MAC Coach of the Year honor and his fifth in the last six seasons. Laws was named to the PING All-Midwest Region Team. He and Yip were named to the All-MAC First Team, while Yip earned Kent States second straight MAC Freshman of the Year honor and fifth in school history. Hurtuk was named to the All-MAC Second Team.
