Kent State out second place Michigan State by two strokes, which made a run at the Flashes after trailing by 14 shots going into the final round. Junior Ryan Yip (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Carroll) also won the individual championship, firing a 1-under 209, to claim his second individual crown and first since winning the Kepler Intercollegiate last spring. Senior Steve Lohmeyer (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood), the leader after the second round, faded with an 80 in the final round, but still managed to finish tied for ninth, his best finish since a similar result last fall at the Country Club of Louisiana Intercollegiate. Lohmeyer shot rounds of 69-70-80 for a 9-over 219.
GOLDEN FLASHES CLOSE IN ON TOP 25: Kent State picked up 44 votes in the latest Golf Coaches Association of America/Precept Coaches poll, good to rank 28th. Kent State was not ranked in the preseason poll.
YIP BLISTERS FIELD AT NOTRE DAME INVITATIONAL: Junior Ryan Yip (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Carroll) fired a 1-under 209 to win the Notre Dame Invitational by five shots. It was his second individual championship and first since winning the Kepler Intercollegiate last spring. Yip shot two rounds in the 60s at the ND Invitational, the first time he has accomplished the feat, lowering his season scoring average to 71.50 strokes per round.
WIEGAND MAKES STRONG DEBUT: Redshirt freshman Tommy Wiegand (Avon Lake, Ohio/St. Ignatius) made a strong first impression at his first career tournament, finishing 18th at the Notre Dame Invitational. He had rounds of 73-75-74 to nab a top-20 finish.
WINNING NOTRE DAME INVITATIONAL BODES WELL FOR MAY: The Golden Flashes victory at the Notre Dame Invitational is a good sign for the spring. The tournament was a preview of the same course that will host the NCAA Central Regional in May 2005. Kent State played so well, only Michigan State was within 16 strokes of the Flashes, who truly won the tournament in the first round, opening a 7-shot lead as the only team to shot under 290 on the day.
FLASHES FINISH THIRD AT INVERNESS: The Golden Flashes finished tied for third of 13 teams at the Inverness Intercollegiate Invitational. Senior Peter Laws (Mississauga, Ontario/Our Lady of Mount Carmel) finished second with a 1-over 214, after rounds of 71-71-72. The finish is his highest since a similar second at the Fossum Invitational in April 2003. Junior Ryan Yip (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Carroll) was eighth at 7-over 220. Senior Steve Lohmeyer (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) tied for 25th at fired a team-low round of 69 in the round two.
THREE FLASHES PLAY IN BELL CANADIAN OPEN: One current member and two former Golden Flashes played in the Bell Canadian Open last week, including current sophomore Marc Bourgeois (Dieppe, New Brunswick/Mathieu-Martin). Bourgeois was joined by former Flashes Jon Mills and David Morland IV in the event. Morland made the cut, finishing T-70 at +10, 294. Playing in his first PGA Tour event, Bourgeois carded a first-round 75, followed by a 79. Mills also missed the cut after shooting +6 in the first two rounds. Bourgeois earned a spot in the field after a runner-up finish in this summers Canadian Amateur.
WHOS BACK: The Golden Flashes return five letterwinners from 2003-04, losing just one regular in the starting lineup. Back for KSU are three All-MAC selections, in senior Peter Laws (Missassauga, Ontario/Our Lady of Mount Carmel), junior Ryan Yip (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Carroll) and sophomore Marc Bourgeois (Dieppe, New Brunswick/Mathieu-Martin). Also back are senior Steve Lohmeyer (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) and senior Joe Hurtuk (Bedford, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel).
PAGE INDUCTED INTO OHIO GOLF HALL OF FAME: Kent State Director of Golf Herb Page was chosen as one of four 2004 inductees into the Ohio Golf Hall of Fame, presented by the Ohio Golf Association. Page, now in his 27th year as head coach of the mens program, has coached the Golden Flashes to 11 MAC Championships, 14 NCAA Regional appearances in 16 years and 12 NCAA Championships appearances. Earlier this year he was inducted into the Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame. Joining Page as inductees in 2004 are major-championship winners Tom Weiskopf and Tammie Green, along with Cincinnati golf administrator George "Duke" Smith. The induction ceremony took place Aug. 9, at Plumbrook Country Club in Sandusky, Ohio. Said Page, "Its extremely humbling to be inducted into such a prestigious hall of fame, whose members include Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer. I want to thank all my players who have played for me along the way. Its becaus of them an my many great teams that I was given the opportunity to be inducted." Page is just the second coach to be inducted into the 10-year old Ohio Golf Hall of Fame, joining legendary Ohio University coach Kermit Blosser, who coached for 53 years.
GOLDEN FLASHES FINISH IN TOP 25 IN 2003-04: The Kent State mens golf team missed out on a MAC Championship last season, but took advantage of an at-large bid to the NCAA Central Regional, advancing to the NCAA Championships for the 12th time with a 10th place finish at the regional. At the NCAAs, Kent State missed the third-round cut, but finished 24th overall, in the teams first appearance at the national championship since 2001.
YIP POSTS LOW-ROUND AT NCAA CENTRAL REGIONAL: At last years NCAA Central Regional, Ryan Yip (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Carroll) fired what he called afterward the best round of his career, in the final 18 holes of the NCAA Central Regional. Yip carded a 69 in that round, including a second nine total of 33, tying for the low-round of the tournament. But the 69 in the final round was more impressive given the fact that no other competitor in the 141-man field came within two strokes of Yip on the day. He had five birdies on his round, one on each of the par fives, and had a crucial birdie on the 17th hole that provided the difference for Kent State to edge Minnesota by a shot in the final standings. It also catapulted Yip from a tie for 34th to start the round to seventh, KSUs highest individual finish at a regional since Jon Mills placed fourth in 2001.
LAWS, YIP ALL-MAC FIRST TEAM; BOURGEOIS MAC FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR: In an awards ceremony following the 2004 MAC Championships, Peter Laws (Mississauga, Ontario/Our Lady of Mount Carmel) and Ryan Yip (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Carroll) earned All-MAC First Team honors, while Marc Bourgeois (Dieppe, New Brunswick/Mathieu-Martin) was named the MAC Freshman of the Year and also earned All-MAC Second Team accolades.
Chris Miller, who shot a final-round team-low 72 at the MAC Championships, earned Academic All-MAC honors. It is the second time Miller has been named to the Academic All-MAC Team, also earning the nod in 2002. He also earned All-America Scholar honors from the Golf Coaches Association.
COMING UP NEXT: Kent State participates in the Windon Memorial Classic, Monday-Tuesday, Oct. 4-5, in Lake Forest, Ill., in a tournament hosted by Northwestern.
