Wrestling Fourth After First Day of Southern Scuffle

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Kent State wrestling team sits fourth after the first day of the Southern Scuffle at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. The two-day event concludes on Thursday (Dec. 30) beginning at 9 a.m.
Three Golden Flashes advanced to the semifinals. Junior Drew Opfer (Sandusky, Ohio/St. Mary's Central Catholic) and sophomore Aaron Miller (Uniopolis, Ohio/Wapakoneta) both posted 3-0 marks on Wednesday to advance to the final foursomes at 125 and 174 pounds, respectively. Redshirt freshman Kurt Gross (North Royalton, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) also advanced to the semifinal round at 157 pounds with a 2-0 record.
As a team, Kent State scored 44 points the first day. The Golden Flashes are fourth behind three nationally-ranked teams: #7 University of Minnesota (96.5), #11 Cornell University (89.5) and #19 Edinboro University (51).
Junior heavyweight Tomas Rodriguez (Orange, Ohio/Orange H.S.) won his only match of the day to advance to tomorrow's quarterfinals.
On a disappointing note, junior Alex Camargo (Brook Park, Ohio/Berea) saw his season-opening winning streak ended at 17 matches when he lost an 8-3 decision to Justin Johnson of Lock Haven University in the quarterfinals.
