Wrestling Hosts Kent State Open at the Fieldhouse on Saturday

The Kent State University wrestling team hosts the annual Kent State Open this Saturday, Dec. 4, at the KSU Fieldhouse. The event, which features both a college division open tournament and a high school invitational, begins at 10:00 a.m.

RECENT RESULTS: The Golden Flashes continued their strong start to the season at the Michigan State Open in East Lansing, Mich. on Nov. 20-21.
Individually, junior Alex Camargo (Brook Park, Ohio/Berea) won the championship at 184 pounds for the second consecutive week, posting a perfect 5-0 record. Classmate Drew Opfer (Sandusky, Ohio/St. Marys Central Catholic) was the runner-up at 125 pounds. In all, seven KSU grapplers placed at the meet, one of the largest and most prestigious open events in the country.
PERFECT START FOR CAMARGO: Junior 184-pounder Alex Camargo ran his record to a perfect 9-0 this season by winning the individual title at Michigan State. He opened the campaign by going 4-0 to win the season-opening Oklahoma Gold Showcase Nov. 13, earning the first Mid-American Conference Wrestler of the Week award for 2004-05.
NEWS FLASHES: Two Kent State wrestlers have received preseason national recognition from the National Wrestling Coaches Association. Junior heavyweight Tomas Rodriguez (Orange, Ohio/Orange H.S.) is ranked ninth and classmate Drew Opfer (Sandusky, Ohio/St. Marys Central Catholic) is ranked 11th at 125 pounds in the NWCA/InterMat Preseason Rankings... In the latest edition of Wrestling International (W.I.N.) Magazine (Nov. 30) both Opfer and Camargo are ranked 18th at 125 and 184 pounds, respectively ... Rodriguez saw his first action of the season at the MSU Open, placing fourth. He missed all of last season with a knee injury... sophomore Jason McGee (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls) placed fourth at 141 pounds at MSU, recording his second fourth-place finish in as many starts... junior Jason Bake (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson) placed sixth at 149 pounds. Four others placed either sixth, seventh, or eighth in the event which featured a field of over 400 wrestlers.
UP NEXT: The Golden Flashes begin the dual meet portion of their schedule on Dec. 11 when they travel to Chatanooga, Tenn. to face a pair of nationally-ranked foes in host UTC and the University of Wisconsin. Wisconsin is currently ranked 13th by W.I.N. Magazine and 17th by NCWA/InterMat. UTC is 16th according to W.I.N. and 23rd in the coaches poll.
