Over 120 Grapplers Compete at KSU Open

KENT, Ohio Over 120 wrestlers representing 17 schools competed in the annual Kent State University Open on Saturday (Dec. 4) at the KSU Fieldhouse. The unscored meet served as the Golden Flashes first home event of the 2004-05 season.
Individually, Kent State had six wrestlers place fourth or higher, led by redshirt freshman John Foster (Dalton, Ohio/Massillon Perry H.S.) who was the runner-up at 165 pounds.
Classmate Kurt Gross (North Royalton, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) placed third at 157 pounds with an impressive 6-1 record. In the eventslargest field (20 competitors), Gross won six straight matches after dropping his first contest.
Sophomore Mike Pierce (Rocky River, Ohio/St. Edward/N.C. State) also placed third at 133 pounds with a 4-1 mark. Three other KSU grapplers took home fourth place finishes: freshman Tanner Schearer (Clyde, Ohio/St. Marys Central Catholic) at 141 pounds, freshman Eric Chine (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) at 174 pounds, and freshman heavyweight Jermail Porter (Akron, Ohio/Firestone).
The Golden Flashes return to action next Saturday Dec. 11 when they travel to Chattanooga, Tenn. To face a pair of nationally rank foes in host UTC and Wisconsin.
