Opfer Eliminated at NCAA Wrestling Championships

Kent State University sophomore wrestler Drew Opfer's (Sandusky, Ohio/St. Mary Central Catholic) season came to an end Friday evening (March 19) with a 9-6 loss to third-seeded Matt Valenti of the University of Pennsylvania at the 2004 NCAA Wrestling Championships in St. Louis, Mo.
Opfer had advanced in the 125-pound consolation bracket with a pin of Christian Staylor of Arizona State University in 2:01 earlier Friday. He had been knocked out of the championship bracket late Thursday, losing 13-1 to top-seeded Jason Powell of the University of Nebraska, after opening the tournament with an 11-8 victory over Grant Nakamura of Iowa State University.
Opfer, who was the Mid-American Conference runner-up at 125 pounds, concludes the season with a record of 26-7.
