Fifth season in 2004
Ben Sirmans will be in his fifth season as Kent State Universitys running backs coach in 2004.
In 2001 Sirmans tutored tailback David Alston to second-team All-Mid-American Conference honors. More importantly, Sirmans has played a major role in Kent States ranking in the top 15 in the nation in rushing each of the past two seasons.
Ben is a very innovative coach with the running backs and works very hard at his job, said Kent State Head Coach Doug Martin. He has a great rapport with his players.
Sirmans previously served as the running backs coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Maine from 1996-99. Maines running backs averaged five or more yards per carry in three of his four years and fumbled the ball just twice during the last two campaigns.
Prior to joining the Black Bears staff, Sirmans was the assistant head coach at Barringer High School in Newark, N.J., where he also served as offensive coordinator and special teams coordinator.
Sirmans earned first-team all-New England and all-Yankee Conference honors as a running back his senior season at Maine in 1992.
A native of East Orange, N.J., he earned a bachelors degree in physical education, health and recreation from the school in 1993.
Sirmans and his wife Tia live in Munroe Falls.
