KENT, Ohio - The Kent State University mens and womens track teams are first and second, respectively, after day one of the Black Squirrel Classic today, Jan. 14. The men have 24 points while the University of Buffalo is second with seven points. West Virginia University leads on the womens side with 36 points as Kent State trails by just one point.
The Kent State men captured both events on the mens side. In the weight throw, freshman Jaroslaw Zakrzewski (Fr., Gdansk, Poland) won his first collegiate title with a toss of 62-3.25. Brent Shelby (Jr., Westlake, Ohio/Westlake) was second with a personal-best 58-1 while Tom Densevich (Sr., Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) took third with a throw of 57-6. On the track, Matt Kwiatkowski (So., Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) won the 500 meters (1:06.78) and Tom May (So., Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) finished second in 1:09.11. Rounding out the action on the mens side, Buffalos Todd Joki leads the heptathlon after four events.
On the womens side, Kent State turned in four top-three finishes. Donielle Swany (Sr., Liberty Center, Ohio/Liberty Center) finished second in the weight throw (58-5.25) and Breann Smith (Sr., Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) was third with a mark of 56-3.25. In the 500 meters, Jessica Davis (Sr., Penllyn, Pa./Wissahickon) placed second in 1:17.39 while Christelle Buholzer (Jr., Chardon, Ohio/Ohio State) followed in third with a time of 1:17.65.
In the pentathlon, West Virginias Abbie Stechschulte won with 3412 points.
Both KSU teams conclude the Black Squirrel Classic tomorrow morning (Jan. 15) starting at 9:45 a.m. in the KSU Field House.
