
Lawson Takes Fourth in Decathlon on Day Two of Texas Relays

AUSTIN, Texas – Kent State freshman TJ Lawson amassed 7,497 points in the decathlon to take fourth-place Thursday in the highly-contested Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.
Lawson's 7,497 points was the most amongst the six freshmen in the field and moves him passed Chris Caine (7,394, 2007) for second in the Kent State record book. Lawson began the day in the seventh place and used three top-five finishes to move into fourth place.
His best event of the day was the discus in which he threw 41.37m (135' 8") to finish in third-place. Lawson took fifth in both the 1,500-meter run and the 110m hurdles with times of 4:37.93 and 14.88 seconds, respectively.Â
Also competing on Thursday was Christian Champen in the men's pole vault and Chelsea Laury in the heptathlon.
Laury finished 17th with a career-best 4,966 points which is the fifth-most in Kent State history and tops her previous best by 117 points. In the long jump on Thursday, Laury leaped 5.33m (17' 6") to take 15th in the event. Â
Champen, a freshman, finished tied for 12th in the pole vault at a height of 5.06m (16" 7.25"). Champen's mark moves him into a tie with Dan Schweitzer (1996) for fifth in Kent State history.Â
Kent State continues competition at the Texas Relays Friday at 11 a.m. ET as Morgan Estes and Sam Tollerud take to the women's pole vault.
