KENT, Ohio – Multiple lifetime personal bests from the men's track and field team helped Kent State cap off a successful event at the Golden Flash Gala on Saturday (Dec. 7).
"I thought and predicted we'd have some good performances and we did," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Bill Lawson. "I was very pleased on a lot of areas. We have a lot of work to do in some areas, but overall it was a solid performance."
Wayne Gordon was a double winner on the day, capturing both the 60m dash (6.85) and the 200m dash (21.39). Kent State's Devin Monroe followed Gordon in the 60m dash with a third place finish and time of 6.97.
William Barnes set a lifetime personal best early in the meet when he posted a winning time of 7.98 on the 60m hurdles. Also in the men's sprints, Matthew Tobin led the field with a 400m dash time of 48.86, which was a lifetime indoor personal best for the true freshman.
The men's field athletes also had their share of success in the closing day of the Golden Flash Gala. Donovan Tolbert took the top honors in the triple jump with a 47-08.00 performance. Jailyn Twitty took second place honors with a 47-05.25.
"I'm very pleased with the men's triple jump," said Lawson. "They are much improved from last year and are starting to get their confidence back."
Kent State went one, two in the men's pole vault as Jesse Oxley took top honors with a 16-00.75 followed by Cory Miller.
Also on the track, Marteze Roper won the 1,000m run with a time of 2:31.40. The women's team was not to be left out of the winning party, as Lynnese Beyan took top honors in the 400m dash with a time of 57.71.
The Golden Flashes will pick up competition again at home in the Doug Raymond Invitational on Saturday, January 11. They follow that with the Akron Dual on January 17 as they work towards a Mid-American Conference championship season.
"I think our men's team is much improved from one year ago at this time," Lawson said. "I think it's going to be interesting to see where we are in a month from right now."
