Kent State Seventh After Round One At Wal-Mart National Invitational Tournament

Laws first round was flawless, including five birdies without a bogey. He shot a 4-under 32 on his opening nine holes en route to carding his best score since a similar 67 at the Bruce Fossum Invitational in 2003 during his sophomore year.
Senior Joe Hurtuk totaled a 2-under 70, mixing four birdies with two bogeys. It was Hurtuks best round of the season and was his best performance since a 69 at the NCAA Central Regional in 2003. Hurtuk is tied for 17th.
Senior Steve Lohmeyer and junior Ryan Yip each registered matching 2-over 74s and are tied for 54th, while freshman Tom Ballinger is tied for 61st after a 3-over 75.
J.J. Killeen from TCU leads the tournament after firing a 6-under 66 in todays first round.
Nine of the 13 teams in the tournament are ranked in the latest GCAA/Bridgestone Coaches Poll. The ranked teams include: Arizona (21), Arizona State (12), Kent State (24), Minnesota (20), New Mexico (4), TCU (9), UNLV (15), USC (6) and Washington (23).
The Wal-Mart National Invitational Tournament is being held at the Omni Tucson Resort and Spa. It is contested at Tucsons Nationals Orange and Gold nine, a par-72, 7,094-yard layout that is the same course played in the PGA Tours Chrysler Classic of Tucson.
