KENT, Ohio After competing indoors last week due to inclement weather the men's track and field team will be back outside for a busy week of competition.
Eleven athletes head to Philadelphias Franklin Field for the 111th annual Penn Relays April 29-30 while 18 athletes will compete in the Hillsdale Relays April 29-30 in Hillsdale, Mich.
Akron Quad Round-Up: Competing indoors due to inclement weather, the men posted six individual victories at the Akron Quad Saturday, April 23. The only events to be contested outside were the throwing events.
Otis Jordan (Sr., Detroit, Mich./Bishop Gallagher) led the way for the men, winning two of the Golden Flash six individual titles. Jordan claimed the 100 meters (10.68) and the 200 meters (21.92). Matt Bailey (So., Uniontown, Ohio/Lake) captured the 400 meters in a time of 49.10 and Jake Haughn (So., Edison, Ohio/Mt. Gilead) took top honors in the 3000 meters (8:40.03). The 4x400-meter relay team also was victorious in 3:16.49.
Marc Mitchell (Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) led the field athletes winning the long jump with an indoor-best leap of 25-0.50 while also placing second in the 200 (21.96). Chad Clemons (So., Marblehead, Ohio/Danbury) had an impressive performance, taking second in the high jump (6-6.75). Phil Rickaby (Jr., N.S.W., Australia/Winmalee) was second in the long jump (24-3) and the triple jump (46-2). Jaroslaw Zakrzewski (Fr., Gdansk, Poland) rounded out the winners, taking the hammer throw invitational title with a toss of 197-0.
Indoor Record Book Notes: It isn't very often that you see indoor records change during the outdoor season, but that was the case at the Akron Quad. All non-throwing events were moved indoors and the KSU track team took advantage of the extra opportunity to dent the KSU indoor record book.
Ofer Barniv (Sr., Kent, Ohio/Roosevent) rose to second on the KSU indoor performance list in the 800 meters with a personal-best time of 1:50.92. Also cracking the top-10 list in the 800 was Bouke Onstenk (Jr., Hoorn, Netherlands) who debuted in eighth place with a mark of 1:52.61. As a result five of the top-10 800-meter times have been achieved by runners currently on the KSU roster, including four this season.
As if winning the 2005 MAC indoor long jump crown wasn't enough, Marc Mitchell turned in the third-best performance in school-history in his signature event with a personal-best distance of 25-0.50. Also moving up the long jump list was Phil Rickaby who is now seventh in the long jump (24-3).
NCAA Regional Report: Thus far in the outdoor season 11 KSU athletes, a third of the team, have qualified for the NCAA Mid-East Regional Championships May 27-28 in Bloomington, Ind.
On the track Mike Inge, Ofer Barniv, Marc Johnson, Otis Jordan, Marc Mitchell and Adrian Ghioroaie (Sr., Bucharest, Romania/UTEP) have qualified for the regional meet. Inge leads the way having qualified in the 800 meters (1:49.50) and the 1500 meters (3:46.96). Barniv also has qualified in the 1500 (3:46.77).
