Men Place Second At Miami

KENT, Ohio - On the heels of five more NCAA regional qualifiers, the Kent State mens and womens track and field teams placed second and third, respectively at the Miami Invitational Saturday, April 9.
The men took second out of of ten teams with 162 points. The University of Cincinnati won with 201.50 points. The women took third out of 13 teams with 112 points. Ball State University won with 144.50 points.
For the second-straight week the mens field athletes posted impressive results, winning four events and qualifying two more athletes for the NCAA Regional meet. Jaroslaw Zakrzewski (Fr., Gdansk, Poland) won the hammer throw with a personal-best mark of 204-3, bettering his NCAA regional-qualifying mark and moving to eighth on the all-time KSU top-10 list, knocking off former Olympian Jud Logan. Andy Nicholas (So., Cincinnati, Ohio/Northview) also posted a NCAA regional-qualifying mark with a toss of 182-11, finishing third. Brent Shelby (Jr., Westlake, Ohio/Westlake) won the discus with a NCAA regional mark of 174-10 while John Harper (So., Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) placed second with a regional-mark of 171-00. Shelby also took second in the shot put (52-5.50). Phil Rickaby (Jr., N.S.W., Australia/Winmalee) won the javelin with a toss of 191-1 and the triple jump (48-11.50), to round out the winners in the field.
On the track, Mike Inge (Jr., Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) led a quartet of winners taking the 1500 meters in a NCAA-regional qualifying 3:48.15. Inges time is the fifth-fastest in KSU history. Otis Jordan (Sr., Detroit, Mich./Bishop Gallagher) won the 100 meters (10.95) and Seth Hutchinson (So., Kent, Ohio/Roosevelt) won the 5000 meters (14:53.90). The 4x100-meter team of Marc Johnson (So., Middletown, Ohio/Middletown), Jordan, Rickaby and Marc Mitchell (Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) also were victorious in 41.48.
Like the men, the womens field athletes had a solid weekend. Julie Ward (Sr., Washington, Pa./McGuffey) won her third-straight javelin competition with a toss of 138-9. Breann Smith (Sr., Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) had a huge day placing second and regionally qualifying in the shot put (50-2.75). Smith also finished second in the discus (155-3) and third in the javelin (131-7). Donielle Swany (Sr., Liberty Center, Ohio/Liberty Center) placed second in the hammer throw with a season-best throw of 166-7. In her first time competing in the triple jump, Stephanie Hunt (So., Alliance, Ohio/St. Thomas Aquinas) won with the 10th-best jump (37-10.75) in school history.
On the track, the women were led by victorious 4x400-meter relay team of Dominika Stokowska (Jr., Lodz, Poland/Lodzki University), Erin Corrigan (Sr., Middleburg Heights, Ohio/Cuyahoga C.C.), Jessica Davis (Sr., Penllyn, Pa./Wissahickon) and Hunt that won in 3:44.11. The foursomes time ranks fifth all-time in KSU history.
Both teams return to action this week at the Sea Ray Relays (April 13-16) and the Mt. SAC Relays (April 15-17).
