Kent State One Shot Out Of Qualifying Spot In 11th Place After Two Rounds Of Regional

NOTRE DAME, Ind. With one round to play in the 2005 NCAA Central Regional, the Kent State University is one shot outside the qualifying spots for advancing to the NCAA Championships. The Golden Flashes are in 11th place at 584 after shooting a 14-over 294 in todays (May 20) second round.
The top 10 teams and two individuals will advance to the NCAA Championships at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md., June 1-4. Kent States third and final round begins tomorrow at 8:15 a.m. EST.
Kent State is in a logjam of teams that will be fighting to stay in or jump into the top 10 teams. The Golden Flashes are currently eight shots out of third place and a similar eight shots out of 17th. A total of 18 strokes separate 19 teams from third-place Missouri and 21st-place Baylor. Kent State is just a shot behind 10th-place Kansas.
Redshirt freshman Tommy Wiegand (Avon Lake, Ohio) leads Kent State and is in a tie for 19th place. He shot 4-over 74 today and is at 3-over 143 (69-74) for the tournament. Junior Ryan Yip (Calgary, Alberta) and freshman Tom Ballinger (Mansfield, Ohio) shot the teams low round today with a 2-over 72. Yip is at 5-over 145 (73-72) through two rounds and is tied for 30th, while Ballinger jumped from 78th place to a tie for 52nd and is at 7-over 147 (72-75). Sophomore Marc Bourgeois (Dieppe, New Brunswick) is 9-over 149 (73-76), while senior Peter Laws (Mississauga, Ontario) rounds out KSU five at 13-over 153 (76-77).
The Golden Flashes made the turn today at even par, but shot 14-over on the second nine. In fact, for the tournament, Kent State is 1-under on the front nine and 25-over on the back nine.
The 2005 NCAA Mens Golf Central Regional is being held at Warren Golf Course on the campus of Notre Dame University. It is a par-70, 7,011-yard layout that was opened in 1999.
