Men Send 13 To The NCAA Mid-East Regionals

Updated Bios KENT, Ohio The men's track and field team returns to action May 27-28 in Bloomington, Ind. for the 2005 NCAA Mid-East Regional Championships. Thirteen athletes will represent the men's team. Competing are Ofer Barniv (1500), Pawel Dutkiewicz (long jump), Adrian Ghioroaie (triple jump, 4x100), John Harper (discus), Mike Inge (800, 1500), Marc Johnson (100, 4x100), Otis Jordan (4x100), Marc Mitchell (long jump, 4x100), Andy Nicholas (hammer throw), Phil Rickaby (javelin), Keith Roberts (110-m hurdles), Brent Shelby (discus and shot put) and Jaroslaw Zakrzewski (hammer throw). MAC Championships Round-Up: Led by five individual championships, the KSU men's track and field team placed second at the 2005 MAC Outdoor Championships. The men totaled 183 points while Central Michigan University won with 220 points. Mike Inge (Jr., Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) led the way for the men winning the 800 meters (1:49.62) and the 1500 meters (3:48.93). The individual titles are the fifth and sixth of Inges impressive MAC career (indoor and outdoor). Adiran Ghioroaie (Sr., Bucharest, Romania/UTEP) finished second on the team with 19.50 points on the weekend. He won his second-straight MAC triple jump title with a regional-qualifying jump of 49-8.50, was fourth in the 100 meters (10.68), seventh in the long jump (23-0.75) and ran a leg on the victorious 4x100-meter relay (Johnson, Jordan, Mitchell, Ghioroaie) (40.19). Marc Mitchell (Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) also was dominant in the jumps winning his second-straight MAC outdoor long jump title and third overall with an outdoor-best jump of 24-9.75. Mitchell also placed sixth in the triple jump (46-0) and ran a leg on the victorious 4x100-meter relay, scoring 15.50 points on the weekend. Pawel Dutkiewicz (Jr., Leszno, Poland/Higher School) also qualified for the NCAA regional meet in the long jump with a leap of 24-2.25, placing fourth, and finished third in the triple jump (46-11). John Harper (So., Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) and Phil Rickaby (Jr., N.S.W., Australia/Winmalee) paced the throwers winning titles in the discus (177-11) and the javelin (206-5), respectively. Rickaby's toss also qualified him for the NCAA Mid-East Regionals. In the hammer throw, Andy Nicholas (So., Cincinnati, Ohio/Northview) finished fourth with a personal-best throw of 187-6. In the sprints, Marc Johnson (So., Middletown, Ohio/Middletown) took second in the 100 meters (10.53) and Otis Jordan (Sr., Detroit, Mich./Bishop Gallagher) was third in the 200 (21.82). In the hurdles, Keith Roberts (Sr., Bellefontaine, Ohio/Bellefontaine) was fifth in the 100-meter hurdles in a personal-best and regional qualifying time of 14.15. In the distance events, James Sjostrom (Sr., Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) led the way, finishing third in the 10000 meters (30:24.39). Also in the middle-distance events, Ofer Barniv (Sr., Kent, Ohio/Roosevelt) placed second in the 1500 meters (3:49.10) and Ryan Schroeder (So. Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood) was third in the 800 meters (1:51.31), rounding out the top performances on the track. In the decathlon, Chris Caine (Jr., Munroe Falls, Ohio/Toledo) was fourth with 6,522 points. Three Named To The 2005 Academic All-MAC Team: Kent State placed three student-athletes, on the 2005 Academic All-MAC Team, the conference announced, May 19. Named to the 16-member mens squad were seniors Ofer Barniv, Marc Mitchell and junior Phil Rickaby. Barniv, who was a 2005 Academic All-MAC indoor track and field selection, graduated with a degree in business management last spring and is currently pursuing a MBA in business administration. Mitchell has a 3.20 grade-point average (GPA) in business information systems. Rickaby holds a 3.72 GPA in exercise science. All three student-athletes also were named to the Academic All-MAC indoor team.
