Men's Golf Places Third at Cleveland State Invitational

CHARDON, Ohio The Kent State University mens golf team finished third overall today (Sept. 13) at the season-opening Cleveland State Invitational at Sand Ridge Golf Club. The Golden Flashes posted a team total of 874, three shots off the pace of Louisville, which totaled 871 after a third-round low team score of 282.
The Golden Flashes were second after two rounds, six strokes behind TCU, but Kent State shot a 10-over par total of 294 in todays third round and despite picking up four shots on TCU, were passed by the Cardinals, who rallied from seventh place to win.
Kent State was paced by senior Ryan Yip, who tied for 11th with a 4-over 217 (77-67-73). Sophomores Tom Ballinger and Tommy Wiegand each tied for 22nd, at 8-over 221. Ballinger recorded rounds of 75-70-76, while Wiegand carded totals of 71-76-74.
Junior Marc Bourgeois, who had two steady rounds to open the tournament, stumbled in the final round, to finished tied for 32nd at 10-over 223 (72-72-79). Kent States scoring five was completed by freshman Peter Ahn, who posted his best round of the tournament in the final round with an even-par 71. He finished tied for 35th at 11-over 224 (77-76-71). Junior David Markle, playing as an individual, finished tied for 62nd at 19-over 232 (80-77-75).
The tournament was played at Sand Ridge Golf Club, a par-71, 7,085-yard layout that will serve as host of the NCAA Central Regional in May 2006.
Kent State next competes at the Inverness Intercollegiate Invitational, Sept. 19-20.
