KENT, Ohio -- Kalvin McRae rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown and Ohio University took advantage of four Kent State University punting miscues with short scoring drives en route to a 17-7 victory at Dix Stadium in a matchup of the top two teams in the Mid-American Conference East Division.
The Golden Flashes (5-3, 4-1 MAC) had won five straight leading up to the game and got 121 rushing yards from sophomore quarterback Julian Edelman. But, costly mistakes in special teams resulted in three Ohio scoring drives of 40 or fewer yards. In brutal weather conditions during the first half, Kent State had punts that netted minus-1 and seven yards and another that was blocked.
Ohio (6-3, 4-1 MAC) has won four in a row and moved into a first-place tie with KSU for first place. McRae and Voncarie Owens had rushing touchdowns as the Bobcats built a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter.
Edelman completed just seven-of-20 passes for 79 yards, but did throw an eight-yard scoring strike to senior tight end Tom Sitko. Ohio's Austen Everson was seven-of-15 throwing the football for 52 yards. He was intercepted once and added 57 yards on nine carries.
Andre Kirkland led the KSU defense with 10 total tackles and an interception. Michael Graham had nine stops and two pass breakups for the Bobcats.
Kent State travels to the University at Buffalo next weekend (Nov. 4) for a 1 p.m. start.
