Men Third After Day One of MAC Meet

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio The Kent State mens track and field team is in third place with 30 points at the conclusion of the first day of the 2006 Mid-American Conference (MAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships, Friday, Feb. 24, in Bowling Green, Ohio. Central Michigan University is first with 45 points, followed by Eastern Michigan University with 43 points.
In the 35-lb. weight throw, the trio of sophomore Jaroslaw Zakrzewski (Gdansk, Poland), senior Brent Shelby (Westlake, Ohio/Westlake) and junior Andy Nicholas (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania North) (61-11 ˝) finished second, fourth and sixth, respectively. Zakrzewski (64-8) and Shelby (63-4 ¾) both had NCAA provisional qualifying distances, with Shelbys mark increasing his personal record.
On the track, senior Seth Hutchinson (Kent, Ohio/Field) took the bronze in the 5000-meter run clocking a time of 14:38.30. The distance medley relay team of juniors Jesse Armbruster (Bucyrus, Ohio/Colonel Crawford), Matt Bailey (Uniontown, Ohio/Lake), Ray Armstrong (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) and freshman Tony Jordanek (Lexington, Ohio/Lexington) were third in 10:02.98.
Qualifying for tomorrows finals in the 60-meter dash was junior Marc Johnson (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown), who finished second in the preliminaries, running the sprint in 6.78. Junior Ray Armstrong and senior Bouke Onstenk (Hoorn, Netherlands) will get a chance to run in the finals for the 800 meters after placing first (1:55.74) and second (1:57.21), respectively. Also, in the 60-meter hurdles freshman Greg Keys (Sandusky, Ohio/Bellevue Senior), sophomore Nick Ivancic (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) and junior Chad Clemons (Marblehead, Ohio/Danbury) may be able to grab the top spot. Keys was third (8.24), Ivancic fourth (8.58) and Clemons eighth (8.71).
The Golden Flashes return to action tomorrow (Feb. 25) at Bowling Greens Perry Fieldhouse at 10:30 a.m. with the mens shot put.
