A Year of Many Milestones for Kent State Wrestling
1- Wrestler in Kent State history with 126 career victories. Alex Camargo became the schools all-time leader in victories at the MAC Tournament, passing Nick Nemeth.
2- Mid-American Conference champions. Kurt Gross (157) and Alex Camargo (184) each placed first at the MAC Tournament, earning automatic bids to the NCAA Championships. It also marked the first two individual MAC champions during Jim Andrassys tenure as head coach.
3- MAC Freshman of the Year awards have gone to Kent State wrestlers since the award started in 1991. Heavyweight Jermail Porter became the third in 2006.
4- Dual meet losses, three of which came to top seven teams (Oklahoma State, Central Michigan, Missouri). The Golden Flashes 14-4-1 record marked the least amount of losses since the 1999-2000 season and the first winning season during Andrassys tenure.
5- Golden Flashes earned berths in the NCAA Division Championships. Kurt Gross and Alex Camargo were be joined by Chad Sportelli, Jason Bake and Aaron Miller, who all earned wild card bids to the national tournament.
6- Years since Kent State placed as high as second at the MAC Tournament. The Golden Flashes 75.5 points in 2006 were the most scored by a KSU team since 1990.
7- Grapplers on the KSU roster boast at least 50 career victories: Alex Camargo- 126, Drew Opfer-88, Aaron Miller- 69, Jason Bake- 62, Kurt Gross- 57, Ben Rings- 54, Willie Leonard- 50.
8- KSU starters with winning records in MAC duals- Alex Camargo (5-0), Chad Sportelli (4-1), Kurt Gross (4-1), Aaron Miller (4-1), Jason Bake (3-2), Jason McGee (3-2), Jermail Porter (3-2) and Ardian Ramadani (3-2).
9- Golden Flashes placed in the top three of their weight class at the 2006 MAC Tournamentâ?¦ A feat that had not been accomplished by a KSU team since 1989.
10- Of-10 starters placed in the top four at the 2006 MAC Tournament. It was the first time since 1988, that every Golden Flash competing earned a spot on the victory stand. All 10 wrestlers also placed either at or higher than their previous MAC ranking.
25- Teams in the NWCA/Intermat Coaches Poll. For the first time in school history Kent State finished the season in that top 25.
100- Wrestlers throughout Kent State history have won individual MAC Tournament championships. Kurt Gross and Alex Camargo became numbers 99 and 100.
