Men's Golf Set to Tee It Up at Mattaponi Springs

KENT, OHIO The Kent State University men's golf team travels to Ruther Glen, Va. for the second annual Mattaponi Springs Collegiate Shootout hosted by Virginia Commonwealth University. The 54-hole event runs Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 25-26, at Mattaponi Springs Golf Club.
• Kent State opened the season by placing eighth in a challenging field at the Inverness Intercollegiate Invitational Sept. 11-12. The even featured 11 teams that ended the previous season ranked in the top 50 of the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index Rankings.
• The Flashes had their best showing of the fall season at last year's inaugural Mattaponi Springs Shootout, tying for second place of 15 teams.
• Then sophomore and current junior Jarrod Page led Kent State at last year's event with a career-best fifth-place finish, shooting 71-74-66--211 for the tournament. His final round 66 was the lowest round by a Golden Flash in 2005-06.
• The Flashes had two other top 20 finishers at the 2006 Shootout. Current junior Tom Ballinger tied for 12th (72-72-70--214) and current senior Marc Bourgeois was one stroke behind, tying for 17th (71-72-72--215).
• All five Golden Flashes placed in the top 38 at last year's Mattaponi Springs Shootout. There were 73 total golfers in the field.
• Kent State posted team scores of 306-307-309--922 (+70) in adverse weather conditions at the Inverness Intercollegiate two weeks ago.
• Jarrod Page was KSU's top individual, tying for 20th place following rounds of 75-78-76--229. Senior Tommy Wiegand (78-79-73--230) tied for 25th place.
• Eight letterwinners return for the Golden Flashes, led by the 2006 MAC Championship co-medalists, senior Marc Bourgeois and junior Tommy Wiegand. Kent State lost just one letterwinner in four-year letterwinner Ryan Yip.
• Kent State is guided by Director of Golf/Head Coach Herb Page (Kent State '74), now in his 29th season directing the Flashes. The 14-time MAC Coach of the Year has led KSU to 13 conference titles and two NCAA regional crowns.
• In leading Kent State to the MAC Championship, Marc Bourgeois and Tommy Wiegand shared co-medalist honors and both earned spots on the All-MAC First Team and the All-Tournament Team. In addition, the two also earned Academic All-MAC honors for their work in the classroom.
• Tommy Wiegand was the MAC's first repeat medalist since Sean Gorgone in 1989-90. In addition, he is just the ninth golfer to win MAC medalist honors at least twice.
• Next, the Golden Flashes will compete at the Windon Memorial Classic outside of Chicago Oct. 8-9. The 54-hole event will be held at Lakeshore Country Club in Glencoe, Ill.
