Cairns leads way for Kent State at four under
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Freshman Brett Cairns (Courtland, Ontario) equaled a career low with a 68 in the second round to lead the Golden Flashes men's golf team into a second place tie after the first day of play at the UNC-Greensboro Brigestone Collegiate. Cairns finished the day two strokes back of the lead in a tie for second with a four under 140 while Kent State recorded a five over 581 (293-288) at the Par 72; 7197 yard Forest Oaks County Club.
Cairns started the day with a even par 72 rolling after starting on hole 11 with a bogey. During the round he made three birdies, setting up his second round charge. In round two, the freshman made six birdies in his round of 68 including three straight on holes 3-4-5.
Senior David Markle (Shelbourne, Ontario / Centre Dufferin) was also in the top ten shooting a one under 143 that put him into a tie for seventh. Markle made three birdies in the opening round, but still posted a 73. He made it up in the second round stringing together 16 pars and two birdies for a 70.
Sophomore David Ludlow (Burton, Ohio / Berkshire) returned to the clubhouse in a tie for 16 after today's action with a 146 total. Ludlow was at even par in the first round making three birdies along the way. In round two he was up and down and despite four birdies he finished at two over with a 74.
Freshmen Jean-Phillipe Paiement (Des Ruisseaux, Quebec) and John Hahn (Hudson, Ohio / Hudson) each had a 154 total, leaving them at 10 over and tied for 62nd after the first two rounds. Paiement shot a 76-78 while Hahn reversed the scores with a 78-76.
The Golden Flashes finish the tournament tomorrow with a single round of play.
